The divorce rate for baby boomers is soaring to unprecedented levels, new statistics show.

According to figures released by Office for National Statistics, 13,678 people over the age of 60 obtained divorces in 2007 - an increase of more than 1,000 compared to the previous year.

The figures also show that the number of people over the age of 60 who have ended their marriages has increased by more than a third in ten years, going against the national trend of divorce rates, which fell for a third year in a row to their lowest level in 26 years.

Sandra Davis, head of family at law firm Mishcon de Reya, told the Telegraph: "People have to spend more time together and the differences that are not apparent when one or both spouses are working are more apparent when they are retired and forced to spend more time together.

"There is often the 'one life' argument at that stage. That, and the possibility of being able to live comfortably by themselves, is pushing women to make the change."
