GAROWE, The new leader in Somalia's self-governing Puntland region has appointed a military committee in early efforts to establish a strong security force, Radio Garowe reports.
Puntland President Abdirahman Mohamed "Farole" appointed the seven-member military committee on Saturday at a press conference in Garowe, the region's administrative capital.
The military committee is composed of six military officials and one Puntland MP, who is part of the committee as an observer.
According to the decree, the committee is tasked with restructuring the security forces, collecting data on personnel and locations, and establishing separate lists of active-duty soldiers and wounded veterans.
The new military committee was given 20 days to complete a report on the total number of soldiers and police in Puntland, as well as add new recruits to the region's security forces.
President Farole and Gen. Abdisamad Ali Shire, Puntland's vice president, campaigned on a promise to restore security, improve public services and promote economic development.
Puntland, located in northeastern Somalia, has had a regional administration since 1998 and held a peaceful election on Jan. 8 that brought President Farole to power.
