MINNEAPOLIS - MINNEAPOLIS -- A 13-year-old is in the hospital with severe injuries after a fight at Sullivan School in south Minneapolis last Wednesday. The school is now asking the victim to leave.

Shafi Mohamud is in intensive care, with broken bones in his nose, face and jaw.

Mohamud said the fight started with an unprovoked sucker punch.

"I was going to my locker this guy called my name and when I turned around he punched my face," said Mohamud.

The school didn't call police. Doctors at Hennepin County Medical Center called police when they saw the extent of his injuries.

A spokesperson for the district says they didn't call police because the school didn't consider the incident an assault. It was a case of disorderly conduct.

The school didn't call Mohamud's mother, either, until the next day.

While the initial police report identified Mohamud as the victim of an assault.

An investigation the next day called it a mutual combatant fight. At the request of the assistant principal, it was changed from an assault, to a case of disorderly conduct.

So far this year there've been nearly 1,200 assaults in Minneapolis public schools, which puts the district on pace to hit the 2,000 mark of previous years.

But Mohamud, who will spend two months drinking his meals through a straw, won't be part of those statistics.

The school had given him several good citizenship awards. Now they are asking him to leave.

This is very sad walahi- it could happen to any immigrant kid. They changed the assault to misconduct and want to expell him and his siblings from the school.

BV, xamud: somalis in Minneapolis are over 50K and don't have even one law firm or a single lawyer to represent them. This is what happens when you don't have a strong community.

oxy, what bothered me is not the beating, it is how the school handled it and still wants to punish the victim and his family.

Terrible incident and one that is pure racism by the school management.

The victim will InshaAllah get justice despite the obstacle placed on him, such as the legal distortion of the true incidence, and the informal policy between the teachers' and management to watch each others' back, even when wrong, to protect, supposedly, their job and the community whose kids they feel to represent.

There are so many lawyers who will jump on this case and teach the racist managment a big lesson.

If they don't win in the state courts, take it to the Federal.

Somali communities need to fix up and stand up for their rights.

Admin - There is a Somali lawyer's association in the UK which offers help and advice to Somalis, is there no such organisation in the US?
