When will there be elections in Somaliland?

Post by paidmonk »

This is getting pathetic, when will you guys have elections?

Riyaale has been in office for 7 years, that's 1/3rd of Siad Barre's term, and you guys were complaining about the old dictator.

Demonstrations in Somaliland are met with gunfire and Pres. Riyaale openly threatens and jails opponents and journalists.

Don't get me wrong, I like Riyaale's leadership and I think dictatorship is better for many societies than democracy, but he's got kursi-addiction worse than Afbiijo.

Well the problem is Riyale is one man, he may be at the top of the pyramid but the pyramid is full of other power hungry and corrupt politicians from every clan in Somaliland, all the Isaaq sub-clans and Gadabursis and Hartis are represented in a delicate balance. If riyale loses power than a lot of powerful people lose the gravy train they have been on for 7 years. They (UDUB) know they will lose any election so are desperate for delay after delay. They barely scraped through last time in 2003, and were given the benefit of the doubt.

Ducaysane,

I'm supporting anything but this current lot. I am frustrated by their lack of ability/unwillingness to get recognition which would be the key to so much development and opportunities for :sland:
I am not one for conspiracy theories but I am beginning to believe they don't want recognition.

Realistically speaking thats either Kulmiye or a coalition of UCID . I would even accept a coalition with UDUB as long as Kulmiye and UCID were well represented.

Riyaale should remain in power, its good for Somaliland. UDUB are well-balanced and mature. UCID are a bunch of unprofessional animals whose leader once vowed to wipe out an entire clan. Kulmiye is teetering on being pro-Somaliweyn and its full of SNM supporters, do you think Awdal, Hargeisa, and Dulbahante will support SNM?

And if Riyaale goes, so does Awdal and so might the areas South and Southeast of Togdheer.

The longer Riyaale stays, the longer tensions will boil, but at least he can sustain the tension instead of 1991 when the dictator left and the cake fell apart. Riyaale should stay unless there is a political solution - he should stay in office for at least another 2 years, until things in Xamar are stable and until his opponents can quiet and organize their supporters.

How can you compare a killer siad barre who murdered and supressed people behind close doors to an elected President. peaceful demos were held yesterday, yes there were some shots fired into the air but only to disperse violent crowds. No comparison to afwayne's govt.

Siad's government killed people, I never saw Siad Barre shoot a man with his own gun.

One of those men was Riyaale, who compiled a list of 70 SNM activists in Berbera, who were executed with no trial.

This isn't about who is worse, they both killed to keep Somalia together and Riyaale shot at those demonstrators today to keep Somaliland together. :sland:
