Re: Healthy eating.
I am always amazed by the variety of foods forumers are familiar with and are fond of, because many of them were simply not available when I was in-country in the Sixties.
Melon was a rare critter. I saw only one, at a friend's house in Kismayu. Never did eata any.
Strawberries??? Who are you kidding.
We had the rare pompelmo, but I never saw oranges. We had liin, really calamandin, a form of sour mandarin.

I think I know that the mangoes along the Jubba were brought by the British before they turned the area over to the Italians I suspect the Zanzabarina bananas were brought by the Omanis, but believe the commercial bananas had to wait for the Italians.
Peace Corps Volunteers and normal Somalis almost never saw that kind of stuff before the Kacaan.

Re: Healthy eating.
Advo,
Please list the fruit and where you found it prior to the Kacaan.
Some fruit was available in limited local areas in the South. I NEVER saw ANY available north of Afgoye. Maybe a few liin.
There just wasn't the transportation or marketing in place back then.
Strawberries and grapes? never.
