The government of Djibouti has sent its engineers to Malawi to offer technical assistance in the construction of the Nsanje Port, which is Malawi’s port of call in the proposed $6-billion Shire–Zambezi waterway project.
Djibouti President Ismail Omar Guelleh said during a recent visit to Malawi that his government had dispatched the engineers after Malawi President Bingu wa Mutharika had asked Djibouti to offer technical assistance with respect to the project.
“We want to work together with Malawi on this project because it is an important project for Malawi, and our joint cooperation in implementing it will help enhance the economic cooperation between the two countries for the advantage of the people of the two countries,” said Guelleh, who accompanied Mutharika on a tour of the port project site.
Malawi Transport and Public Works Minister Henry Chimunthu Banda said in an interview that Malawi had approached Djibouti to assist on the project because the East African nation had one of the best-managed seaports in the world, with capacity to handle six-million to eight-million tons of cargo a year.
He hinted that the Malawi government expected construction on the Nsanje Port, which is being undertaken by Portuguese Contractor Mota Engil, to come to an end in December this year. The Shire–Zambezi waterway will help landlocked Malawi save on huge transport costs, which mainly uses road transport to ferry imports and export to and from the seaports of Beira and Nacala, in Mozambique, Dar-es-Salaam, in Tanzania, and Durban in South Africa.
Malawi, Mozambique and Zambia – the key beneficiaries of the project – have already signed a memorandum of understanding to work together on the project.

This little country in Africa is doing big tings, while Somalia, big for nothing useless Somalia State is disintegrating piece by piece. I wouldn't mind if Djibouti annexes Somalia. They need to utilize all the ports Somalia has.
