To me y'all sound the same.. you are either talking about those who act like AA's and/or real AA's.. I cannot really differentiate .

As for the topic's issue.. some somali youth do put an extra effort to talk about their country of origin..since there is basically no country to go back to..its more of a psychological effect..rather than anything else/particular or nobility and special genes about somali ppl.

Warsai, I use the term Habashi to target specific crew and sxb using the argument being here too long doesn't give them a free pass, This is something I have been observing since I was a kid in southern California, I use to wonder why (Mexicans, Asians, blacks etc) fought us and teachers hated us on daily basis and now I know it was because we refused to assimilate, talking in our languages, hanging out with each other (aswell as others), forming exclusively somali gangs but the habashis (and other africans) no one picked on them because they were very busy emulating AA's, sometimes even acting too ghetto just to be accepted. I swear the first time I saw Eritrean youth speaking their mothers tongue was in Seattle and I was surprised actually.

As for Nipsy Hustle, Im not picking on him because his a gangster rapper, hell most Somalis I knew were in gangs too, I swear I even met a Ogaden kid who was in a south east Asian gang, was an OG (I know ironic  ) but he literally was commanding hundreds of them and he had a huge Somali flag tatoo aswell as map of Somalia on his chest. But back to Nipsey, very promising kid, I think he could be the newest best west coast rapper only and if only he smartens up, First and foremost he needs his own style and people outside of California will have hard time identifying with his shid if he doesnt, gangster rap is dying (beat to death actually), so I would advise him to come out with his own style.

but I will be waiting for the day I see a habashi artist bigging up his folks

Voltage, U never heard of the Pdiddy somali connection...some kid (non somali) was even telling me, Pddies mother's father was somali, funny shid and I thought that shid was only in somali circle, and he also was asking me if fabulous, Kobe Bryant etc were somali

as for Micheal Steele, he was raised by white couple from infant stage and I would argue if it was upto me that's his a bonafide MJ, hell look at the characteristics, policies and dabadhalifnimo (pun intended)

Fabolous is Dominican and a lot of Dominicans do look very Somali. There was a girl in my University whom I used to think was Somali for the longest time until she spoke to me in Spanish one day.

Advo, it has a lot to do with religion. They feel like they are very close to madowga wadankaan.

Advo....all I can say is woooow! you know what i'll give you the benefit of the doubt you sound like you got some sense, but your far from the truth, I'll break it down for you. Eritreans migrated 30 years ago in spurts and dispersed throughout the country except D.C., eventually nature takes it course as 2nd and 3rd generation Eritreans born in the states tend to lose some culture. Where as Somalis came in droves in the mid 90s and concentrated in several cities primarily Toronto, Minn & Ohio(I'm originally from Columbus so trust I know). With the large communities developing in these areas it's very natural to develop and maintain cultural values and language. But dont get twisted I remember a Somali homie of mine used to joke on how Somali would assimalate quicker than race depending on where they lived. "Drop a Somali off in the suburbs, next day their bigger peckerwoods than Jack and Jane. Drop a Somali off in the hood, next day they c-walkin. Drop a Somali off in hickville, next day they riding bulls" LOOOOL. Real talk, this is coming from my Somai home boi.

But when it comes to patriotism there is no one close to Eritrean youths, i'm just keeping it real. When the motherland comes a calling (war or natural disaster), her children in the disapora answer the call. Thats a true measure of one true sense of identity in action.

Question of the day........ What's the point of these recent arrivals and folks who've been here ten years speaking Somali language on point, when the homeland is being torn apart. Eventually, if the call of duty is not met Somalia as we know it will cease to exist. And then holla at me and see if the language or culture will maintain as well.

Voltage wrote:Warsai, calm down. Looyaan just said to u Habesho equals all Christian Orthodox Ethiopians although I have noticed the older Somali generation even group Oromo under Habesho. The most general definition is basically non-Somali Horn of African who is not of Bantu origin so you qualify. You can be Gambella from Ethiopia or Tigre from the coast of Eritrea and you are all Habesho to us.

Advo, JHoliday is half Eritrean so you might as well say he is full Black living in the U.S and did you know Q from Making the Band is half-Eritrean? His single mom is Eritrean and that lady was on the show couple weeks ago and I would never thought she was anything but full black from the way she was acting. I have noticed Eritreans don't have any concept of identity and culture. Maybe I am generalizing but I notice majority of them don't. :|

Not true. J-holiday is or isn't half Eritrean - we just don't know a lot about him. The rest you speak of are not Eritrean at all; they are 100% black americans - don't confuse Ethiopian groupies on Abesha.com saying they're half Eritrean as facts because those idiots claim Kobe Bryant is half Eritrean too.......again, J-holiday is or isn't Eritrean (we just don't know about him), while Nipsy hussle is half Eritrean who just spent 3 months in Eritrea. Nipsy will be preforming at Eritrean festivals. Nipsy, despite being raised in the hood and being only half Eritrean (father's side) still reps Eritrea hard. He has a tat on his back of Eritrea.

Most Eritreans can speak their mother language. I'll admit Somalis speak their mother language the most but that's because Somalis tend to live with one another and have a larger diaspora population....the other factor is Somalis mostly recently migrated to the US during the early 90s to mid 90s while most Eritreans came in the early to mid 80s. Either way voltage, somalis and Eritreans and every African in the west will assimilate. This is a fact you can't run or breed your way out of. It may take a few decades or even a century, but horn of Africans living in America and abroad today will be completely Americanized or claim a different ethnic origin in the future; I.e, Black American, White American, Asian..etc..etc.
