The impact of abuse

University of Victoria's Sexual Assault Centre*** posts the following childhood sexual abuse statistics:

* 1 in 3 females and 1 in 6 males in Canada experience some form of sexual abuse before the age of 18.
* 80% of all child abusers are the father, foster father, stepfather or another relative or close family friend of the victim.
* Incestuous relationships last 7 years on average
* 75% of mothers are not aware of the incest in their family
* 60-80% of offenders in a study of imprisoned rapists had been molested as children
* 80% of prostitutes and juvenile delinquents, in another study, were sexually abused as children.

* 69% of substantiated physical abuse involved inappropriate punishment
* 68% of substantiated sexual abuse involved touching and fondling
* 58% of substantiated emotional maltreatment involved exposure to family violence
* 48% of substantiated cases of neglect primarily involved failure to supervise the child properly, which lead to physical harm

The overall rate of domestic violence in this country remains unchanged in the latest study from Statistics Canada.

In a new report released Thursday, the agency said that seven per cent of women and six per cent of men end up abused by their current or former partners.

The numbers are based on data gathered between 1999 and 2004. They show that, since 1999, the five-year rate of spousal violence has remained unchanged at seven per cent

In terms of numbers, an estimated 653,000 women and 546,000 men "encountered some form of violence," Statistics Canada said.

Since the recession took hold, social service organizations say, there has been a significant spike in the number of Canadians seeking counselling for family violence – and the level of abuse has taken a disturbing turn for the worse.

"In all of our programs where we're seeing new people come in, we're finding that they are talking more about the economic impact that has caused them to come forward," said Lisa Falkowsky, executive director of the Calgary Women's Emergency Shelter.

"But we're also finding that for the women coming forward, the complexity and severity of what they're demonstrating is much more severe than we've seen in a long time," she said. "I've got counsellors who have worked in the field 20-plus years and they've never seen what they're seeing now."

Falkowsky said calls to the agency's 24-hour family violence help line in mid-March to Easter jumped 200 per cent compared with the same period last year. The previous 30-day period saw a 300 per cent rise from the same time in 2008.
