if it proves too dangerous then you may consider visiting Juula and Jawaay Islands (Jubada Hoose Islands) they look the same as Jilib and have Somali Bantu locals mote like your 60's freinds.

Acacia Nilotica - edible pods with a white flesh and black seeds


Hyphaene thebaica - Palm doum, I don't know if this one's found in Somalia, it was certainly common in djibouti. The afar people made a slightly fermented beverage from its fruit, called domo. it had a reputation for helping men "perform"


Grewia - known as hohob in somali. These little red berries grow in the wild and are a favorite of kids
