Do Somali Families Eat Meals Together?

Post by IRONm@N »

When is the last time you saw a Somali family sitting in a big table to eat meals together, Somalis are individualists, and everybody eats their food separately.
my family don't eat together, neither did the houses I visited of friend and family, did I ever see them sitting on a big lunch table eating together. even somalis in restuarants eat alone or by themselves.

It's very important for family to eat together, they discuss problems, kids and parents spend quality time together, I think we should make it part of our culture. It's also important to have different types of foods, from deserts, to fruits and vegetables, to breads and meats.

when you go home today, tell you family, you won't eat by yourself, that you want to have one big dinner together at once. make it a habit, and it will be part of family activity.

Well, they don't have to eat from one big bowl, what I'm saying is to share a meal, and sit on one table, but each person will put his food on his plate.
you are not only teaching kids a lost art, but you will also teaching eating manners, and how to socialize, so that when they go to school or work caferteria they don't have to embrass themselves by eating with an open mouth and talking while their mouth is full, we use to learn those stuff at dinner table.
But nowadays it's convenient for family members to heat up their own meal in the microwave at different times and retreat to their own corners of the house and go back to the computer or watching tv.

IronMan,

Good topic, indeed. And yes, I second your opinion. However, it looks like that others are not getting the point. The point here is not about the meal. It is about getting together and getting daily feedback from everybody. Each family member would discuss his/her day--especially parents would ask the children what happened at the school today. It is daily report from school, which teacher/friend did what. This is how parents track the status of their children's lessons, their friends, the bullies that bother them. At the dinner table, parent can tell which child is sad because of what happened at the school today.

About table manners, I don't know if we Somalis have one!. Walaahey everytime I go Somali restaurents, I am shocked how grown-ass-men eat. You would swear the chickens would have better eating manners than those grown-ass men. What a disgusting creatures.
