The verse in the Qur'an is "And We have decreed set phases for the moon, until it ends up looking like an old date branch. It is not for the sun to overtake the moon nor for the night to outstrip the day; each one is swimming in a sphere. (Qur'an, 36:39-40)"
And I have shown that the Quran DOES state the sun and moon both orbit the earth. That is the issue; not whether the sun or moon actually moves, it's their orbits about the earth. We know the moon orbits the earth but the sun doesn't. The Quran says the sun orbits the earth. How so? Here in these verses:
And He it is Who created the night and the day, and the sun and the moon. They float, each in an orbit. Surah 21; Verse 33
-- the key phrase here is "each in an orbit." But orbit about what? We find the answer in the following verses:
014.033
YUSUFALI: And He hath made subject to you the sun and the moon, both diligently pursuing their courses; and the night and the day hath he (also) made subject to you.
PICKTHAL: And maketh the sun and the moon, constant in their courses, to be of service unto you, and hath made of service unto you the night and the day.
SHAKIR: And He has made subservient to you the sun and the moon pursuing their courses, and He has made subservient to you the night and the day.
-- in this verse we see the purpose of the sun and earth is provide nigh and day FOR the earth. In other words, the sun orbits the earth. In another verse I posted earlier, the sun and moon seem to be locked in a race with the moon "following the sun."
091.001
YUSUFALI: By the Sun and his (glorious) splendour;
PICKTHAL: By the sun and his brightness,
SHAKIR: I swear by the sun and its brilliance,
091.002
YUSUFALI: By the Moon as she follows him;
PICKTHAL: And the moon when she followeth him,
SHAKIR: And the moon when it follows the sun
Furthermore, the Quran doesn't mention: solar system, empty space, planetary system, the planets, our galaxy, quasars and pulsars, black holes or any advanced cosmology/astronomy that would impress educated modern man. In fact, the Quran says the sun sets and rises somewhere here on earth in verses: 18:86 and 18:90
From there verses a couple of things are clear. One, BOTH the sun and the moon orbit the earth. Two, the quran is only HALF right. True, the moon does orbit the earth but not the sun. Of course the Quran is completely wrong with the whole business of sun setting somewhere here on earth or being chased by the moon.
Ergo, the Quran is wrong.
But lets, arguendo, say that I am wrong and the Quran is correct in claiming:
And We have decreed set phases for the moon, until it ends up looking like an old date branch. It is not for the sun to overtake the moon nor for the night to outstrip the day; each one is swimming in a sphere. (Qur'an, 36:39-40)
Solar eclipse REQUIRES the moon and sun to "overtake" each other. Otherwise solar eclipses would be impossible if Quran 36:39-40 is true.
Therefore, Quran is doubly wrong. And I'm still right.

Now here is the thing, the Moon rotates on the Earth's axis and essentially it ORBITS the Earth. The Earth and Moon system in turn orbit the Sun as a pair which means the moon orbits the sun.[/color]
Complete nonsense. Quran shows no signs of knowledge about planetary motions at all. How can you claim the earth orbits the sun when the Quran says the sun rests in muddy spring here ON earth? This verse, which I posted above, essentially discredits your argument above. My argument that the Quran actually says the sun and the moon both orbit the earth makes more sense and is supported by the Quran.
Voltage wrote:The Qur'an specifically says that the Sun is the center of the Universe,
Actually, you say that! No where in the Quran does it say the sun is the center of our solar system (not universe btw). How can it, the Quran doesn't even acknowledge the existence of solar system or universe. Instead the Quran says the sun sets in muddy spring here on Earth. So you're clearly lying about the Quran once again.
