Sanaag, 20 November 2009 - As part of the endeavors being made to expand the coverage of telephone service nationwide, about 70% of the self-declared autonomous state’s total area has received mobile phone service, according to Mr. Guled Abdikadir Hassan, development manager of mobile phone service Somali Telecom Group.
Indicating that the mobile phone service expansion was launched 2 years ago, he explained that in the first year, the main service was confined to 2 cities as putting in place the necessary infrastructure facilities was time-consuming. After 2008, however, cell phone service was expanded to all the regions, and that the number of beneficiaries has risen to 227,500, he added.
Noting that in 2007-2008, 85% of the customers were from Erigabo, Mr. Hassan pointed out that at present 62% of the customers are from the administrative capital and 38% living in remote areas as a result of the expansion of infrastructure facilities in the domain.
He went on to say that the mobile phone service installation project would continue until every square meter of Somali soil gets access to such service, besides providing reliable one through tackling busy traffic network.
Following price reduction in the subscription and installment of mobile phone line, the number of new customers has grown double-fold, reports added.
