What the hell is everyone raving about? Has anyone here listed a legitimate reason to dislike Al-Shabaab. I for one can pick a million reasons to dislike them, but I'm a pragmatic person, any reasonable person should be, and seeing that Somalia as with all of Africa, needs pragmatic solutions, Al-Shabaab is that answer.

This forum has been around since 2001 and since then (yes I do frequently look over the archives) this has been the most vocal period against a certain group and that group is Al-Shabaab, in fact the entire internet from this place to SLife to SOL is buzzing with anti-Shabaab rhetoric. But in a country that has extremely limited options why is everyone fussing? Al-Shabaab is at war, people die in wars in case you all forgot.

As you know, I'm a socially-liberal secular Marxist who would be the last guy to fight for Al-Shabaab of his own volition but common sense brings me to view Al-Shabaab as Somalia's only decent choice, they're not all bad. Didn't we all agree on this forum that Somalia needs authoritarian guidance? Is this not the miracle you all wished for, and best of all they are Islamists like the ones you all praised in Afghanistan a few years ago. I would be content blaming your anti-Shabaab views on qabil but that's not so, its for other reasons that I don't understand, maybe mass hysteria or some shit.

Al-Shabaab doesn't rape or rob, that alone should shut you all up, there's maybe a single-digit number of militias and national armies in the entire world that can boast the same. You should be thankful as a people but thank god bi-polarity is limited to web-based Somalis and not those who see this situation on the ground.

Al-Shabaab is basically another Taliban and they simply want to make Somalia another Afghanistan.. so really this recent tragedy should not come as a shock. What happened it was the expected and the inevitable and what they have in store for Somalia is much much much worse than what occurred. Having said that I don't think they are the only enemy in this month, in this year and in this day, but I do understand what you mean I'm just looking at the bigger picture.

Our political state of mind have been damaged by the 20 years civil war, even those who never been to Somalia and therefore never seen the war seem to be affected by the war. Our judgment lies on seeing things through western lenses; the west says al shabab are terrorist organization so we must follow what they say. The West demonize anyone, or any group they feel threat from by giving them a title, by making us scared of that group even if they have to do inside job to make us feel like we’ve been threaten by this group. Look at history is always been this way, we never realize what they doing though.

Worse is, we don’t know what’s good for us, we are selfish human beings who only care what’s best for us, like some snetters especially the girls who are anti al shabab only hate al shababe fear that their little freedom will be taken away. They enjoy the skinny jeans, colourful scarves and bright lipstick that they would fight for this silly freedom (i call it silly freedom because is not worth fighting for), I rather lose the little freedom I have here to gain peace in Somalia, so what they enforce the hijaab, jilbab or niqaab? If it means there will be peace let them enforce that and more, is good for us in the long run actually.
