Oscar, a former stray cat, is a resident at a nursing home. The nursing home thought that having cats around would help the patients feel more comfortable. What they didn’t expect was that this particular cat had a sixth sense.
To date, Oscar has predicted 50 deaths in the nursing home. This Rhode Island wonder will enter a patient’s room that is near death and curl up with the patient and sooth the family members.
Generally a little stand-offish, this tabby cat only seems interested in the patients’ right before they pass away. Family members as well as friends of the newly deceased say that Oscar brings comfort to the dying and the families. That having the cat curled up and comfortable helps them, in turn, be more comfortable with the event.
Nurses at the home began to notice a pattern in Oscar’s habits and mentioned them to the resident doctor. At first, the doctor thought that it was merely coincidence that the cat appeared near the time of a patient’s death. But further study has shown that Oscar only appears when someone is about to die, and that he has not made a mistake.
Scientists believe that Oscar has the ability to sense death by smelling ketones in the skin of the dying patient. Others believe he is just a gift.
