Re: I felt so embarrassed today
Somali alcoholics stopped being shocking over 10 years ago. Last Friday I saw this drunk as hell Somali wearing a qamis..dude came up to me to ask for some change & I did a u-turn and walked away like I didn't hear him. You shouldn't let this stuff shock you or feel embarrassed by it.

An accomplice aa? I was just helping him as a Somali...laakiin waa maxay Sakhraanimo? Doesn't sound too goodMr. Yungnfresh wrote:OliveOil wrote:Walahi Mr. Youngfresh I totally agree with you. Its supposed to be the opposite! Hada its becoming more and more common with the older generation.
Laba bil ka hor nin baa Somalinimo the corner store ooga soo qaaday (which I will never do again)...ninkii was carrying a bottle of something in a brown paper bag. And of course, i figured it would only be a qamri
You were an accomplice to sakhraanimo? Maxaa kugu dhacay walaal
On the real though, even dumarka aren't safe from it. Wallahi I've seen a Somali lady oo caruur yar wadato at The Beer Store in my neighbourhood, LIVE like it's nothing. Maba qariyaan anymore. It was so weird seeing islaan Somali ah doing that patented islaamo running motion (which is more like a quick shuffle with their arms swinging, and they're really actually going no faster than someone who's walking normally) towards the khamro.
Inaalilaahi wa inaa Ilaahay raajacuun
Laafyo iyo xarago ayeeba ku tagaayaan the qamri store
Yup dumarka even...war umadeena way baloowday...hada gargaar xataa wax uma taraayo! Its sad really.
One time this chick tried to drag me to a wine tasting event...and she was the first to be deleted from my phone list

Re: I felt so embarrassed today
In a society like ours { who for some can be restraining } where there is an important emphasize on sharaf , conduct , image ..it can become lethally embarrassing
The guy /gal @ first experiment with booze to "let loose" a lil bit , till the next minute he is addicted and have lost track of all the parameters of conduct in his social environment .

but do not let it bother you . Anigu when I used to do that shit , I would get a particular quick in getting into any somali "s face that would give me " the look" . At the end of the day , I was only fighting myself, everybody knows that you have to pay a price when consuming alcohol if you are muslim . Some confront their reality , some accomodate it to their peril. The single biggest error I have made in my life ! But it is not easy to quit once you've become addicted to it , so in our part we also need to show patience as much as we can
lool@ Show patience....why not if the person is a love one!? I wouldn't wanna leave a family member behind if he/she is a drinker!! Hada one of my uncles drinks but he is in his late 20s...not old! My mother still loves him and is treated like everyone else in the family! Weird thing is my mother dislikes her jaadle brother more than her drinker cousin
Of course its hard once u get hooked...i think Somalis should consider sending thier love ones to a rehab or something...even that is taboo

Well true...thats possible. Laakiin bro, I can spot a Somali right away like i said. I can tell them apart from other Horners...so i am pretty sure that these men were Somali!1nemansquad wrote:its just that sometimes you can easily be mistaken, its hard to tell the difference between an Eritrean, Oromo, Amhara and Somali; i don't believe a group of Somalis would drink together like that given that is extremely taboo in our culture to do things like that in GROUPS.
Laakiin what u r saying does make sense...usually our people tend to go out with non-Somalis when drinking in public...

I wish I were a fly on the wall during that Somali lady's purchase...."egiskayuus me, I needha a two-elif back af Alaksaandhar Kiithis BIIR, blease"
I have a feeling it's only gonna get worse though...pretty soon, we might see khamro being sold at Somali makhaayads and riwaayads.

I'd be more embarrassed that they were drinking in Applebees, quite frankly.
I mean, who goes to Applebees to get plastered? What the hell does Applebees even serve? Ten dollar margaritas? Margaritas that probably taste more like dish-water than actual alchohol?

Well I don't exactly know what you r talking about when it comes to the "first experiment with booze to 'let loose' a lil bit , till the next minute he is addicted and have lost track of all the parameters of conduct in his social environment." I see that you know very well about this kind of behavior....so what made u stop? And more importantly, maxaa kugu sababay markii horay?SahanGalbeed wrote:In a society like ours { who for some can be restraining } where there is an important emphasize on sharaf , conduct , image ..it can become lethally embarrassingThe guy /gal @ first experiment with booze to "let loose" a lil bit , till the next minute he is addicted and have lost track of all the parameters of conduct in his social environment .

What were they drinking???OliveOil wrote:I went with three of my girl friends to Applebees...waxay yahiin a Moroccon, an Algerian, and a Korean....of course 2 muslims and christian weeyaan. Laakiin the Christian one is very much interested about Islam and knows a lot about it. So while we were there, we saw like 6-7 older Somali men in their late 30s to mid 40s at the bar section drinking![]()
