Economic success in Somaliland
Somaliland booms.
They are cashing in on relative stability in the enclave to build solid businesses.
Goods in the market are brought in through the port of Berberra. The port itself is the backbone of the territory's economy and the main source of revenue for the government.
Berbera located off the Gulf of Aden, which connects this part of Africa to the Middle East, it is the port of choice for many.
Ali Omar is in charge of the port's management.
"This port is important not only to Somaliland but the whole region," he says.
"Goods brought in through here find there way to Ethiopia, Somalia, Kenya and sometimes even Uganda."
The government estimates that the diaspora sends back about $500m to Somaliland every year.
Yet Somaliland's population also sends money to their relatives abroad, when the going gets tough for them.
As one woman, Amina, says:
"I am sending money to my mother who lives in Canada. I want her to come and stay with us during the summer. I have up to seven relatives living in Canada. We support each other."
he large flows of capital have contributed to the rapid economic recovery in post-war Somaliland.
In the capital, multi-storey buildings are springing up.

Re: Economic success in Somaliland
YES THERE IS RELATIVE, PEACE YET THE POLITICAL SITUATION LURCHES FROM ONE CRISIS TO ANOTHER.
THERE IS NO SOMALILAND ECONOMY TO SPEAK OF.THE VAST MAJORITY OF THE POPULATION IS EITHER UNEMPLOYED
OR UNDER EMPLOYED.ABJECT POVERTY IS WIDESPREAD,CHILD MALNTRITION AND FAMINE/DISEASE STALKS THE COUNTRYSIDE.
BIG BUSINESS MEN/GOVT OFFICIALS COLLUDE TO OPERATE DEFACTO MONOPOLIES .
THE GOVERNMENT PROVIDES ALMOST NO PUBLIC SERVICES(ACCEPT POLICE AND ARMY,TO KEEP THEMSELVES IN POWER).
THE POPULATION IS ALMOST ENTIRELY DEPENDENT ON NGOS FOR RELIEF,AS A RESULT THEY`VE DEVELOPED THE TYPICAL AFRICAN DEPENDENCY SYNDROME.
THE CORRUPT OFFICIALS AND BIG BUSINESS MEN HAVE BECOME SO DEPENDENT ON BERBERA TO DELIVER THEIR MONOPOLIES,THEY ARE
ACTIVELY PREVENTING PEOPLE FROM PURSUING IMPORT SUBSTITUTION POLICES,EG WHEN A CONSORTIUM OF BUSSINESSMEN WANTED TO REOPEN THE
BERBERA CEMENT PLANT,THEY WERE BLOCKED BY CORRUPT GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS AND WELL CONNECTED MONOPOLISTS.
EVEN THOUGH BY OPENING THE CEMENT PLANT WOULD HAVE BEEN IN THE DIRECT INTERESTS OF THE POPULATION AT LARGE,
WHO HAVE TO SPEND VALUBLE HARD CURRENCY ON IMPORTED CEMENT,LINING THE POCKETS OF THE POLITICAL/BUSINESS ELITE.

Yeah there have been some political shenanigans though not to the extent that you implying
But when you compare it to it's regional neighbours the efforts of the population cannot be denied.Especialy now that the seven-year ban on export of Somaliland livestock to the Gulf has been lifted, which has had a possitive effect on both the rural and urban economies.
As for the malnutrition and disease that you talk about give us the sources that say Somaliland has widespread problem with these facts which are beyond it's control

Playing with fire is dangerous!
Then again you don't have to be a PHD holder in economics or use fancy words to analyse the situation. Simply when I see a fully grown adults and their whole families, running, screaming and throwing harmful objects at the so called police - for the mere reason of basic necessity (water & weat ). That is what I would describe as malnourished economy - if you can call it an economy that is.
O'righ peace
