OMG: Tropical Storm Alert for Puntland

Post by Afri_Somali »

Heavy rains in Bari region as tropical storm passes the Horn of Africa

During the last 24-hours a tropical storm has developed in the northern Indian Ocean and hit the north eastern parts of Somalia (Puntland). Currently the storm is bringing strong winds and heavy rains along the coastline of Bari region (Figure). The storm is expected to move away from the coastline towards the northwest direction into the Gulf of Aden. The storm is expected to diminish by May 22nd, 2010.

The rains are however expected to extend inland in the next 12 hours with moderate winds. Therefore, it is advisable to stay in doors and take the necessary precautions since these winds might lead to destruction of weak structures. Flash floods are also foreseen in the coastal towns on Bosasso, Qandala and Caluula.

SWALIM and partners are monitoring the situation and will update you accordingly. For more details on rainfall and cyclone tracking you can consult:

AfriSomali,

The massive deforestation is going to make things much worse due to flash flooding, and massive mudslides. Hopefully this will dump enough rain to recharge the aquifers and pastures.

May it rain in all of Somali inhabited lands.

I don't know much about Bari but I can say that Bosaso is worse than New Orleans when it comes to vulnerability. This city is surrounded 100% by sea and mountain range. Large scale floods or tsunami can drown every1 in it
