The Christians are all high strung about this issue too, but I don't see why.

Where does it say in the Qu'ran that women cannot lead prayers? Or the Bible? Or anywhere?

It doesn't say anywhere in the Qur'an that women should lead prayers either. It doesn't say how we should pray either. So where does that leave us?

That's why we have not only the Qur'an, but also the Hadeeths. There's a consensus between the scholars of today and yesterday that women should not lead prayers or act as Imaam.

The Qu'ran has a long list of things that are outlawed, if Allah did not want women to lead prayers, it would have been specified in the Qu'ran that this was the case.

It´s the other way around, everything that has to do with the religion has to be specified in the Qur´an. So for example if you say women can lead the prayer, you have to prove that it is allowed in the Qur´an or hadiths. This basic rule prevents us to add things into the religion. As for other non-religious aspects of life like education, food, trade/work etc are all permitted until it is specified that it is not allowed in the Qur'an or hadiths.

In a nutshell:
Acts of worship= not allowed (haram), until it is specified that we can do that
Non-religious= permissible ( halal) until it is specified that it is not permissible. Then it becomes haram

The Qu'ran says that men and women are equal within Islam, and in Islam, men can be Imams, so it seems to me that the Qu'ran is implying that women can be Imams as well.

James

With all due respect sir, i have to discourage you think like an archealogist that you are when it comes to the Quran, and Islam's stance in the role of a woman. We dont have to get into details in this matter. I am not familiar with Quran myself, yet i dont presume to speak for it. But i know one thing for sure-- man and woman are NOT considered equal in Islam. That does not mean-- Women are degraded or looked down on in Islam, it just means Women are put in a higher pedestal in Islam. But that also does NOT mean, womens role is at home alone. Prophet Mohd pbuh married his boss-- Khadija--she was a business woman, that tells you alot.

It is impossible to sit and openly claim woman are equal to men. How can that be? I mean, without getting in the technicality of the Quran, lets just concetrate the creation of woman first. Eve was created from the ribs of Adam. What does that tell you? Then, we are told that women should cover themselves and protect their chaste. How is this clause going to protect them from leading a prayer as an imam? No this ridiculous. Only lesbian acquaans like surrender who have biological disorder of hormones would endorse this-notion of - i am equal like man or strong like man. Who r we kidding here?

No-- girls just wanna have fun, Cindy Lauper said that best.
