Re: Getting married will drain U financially
paying all that will be alright if you stayed together for 10 yrs or so. but in today's marriages, they are breaking up after the first month or so, so all that investment and get nothing in return is really a waste of resources.
I think aside from paying dowry, which is a man's duty, everything else should be 50/50, the woman should pay half the cost of furniture and food and wedding expenses, than shouldn't be to quick to leave a couple weeks later. when you don't invest in something, its easy to walk away.
if you are getting a long term relationship with a quality girl, good behavior, beautiful its worth it, but if you are paying that for a woman that can't cook or clean, wants to argue with you and run around the city, than you are in disaster.

For that money, I want to at least test the goods

Re: Getting married will drain U financially
new furniture, new paint, cleaning, etc = $12,000
...... would you rather live in house full of old furniture invested with all sorts termites and insects and dirty house with your new pride?
renting hall, food, etc = $7,000
..... this is only a problem when over 90% of the guests are people you dont know, not related to and never met( suppose that is the case in most somali weddings)
dowry = NA
dahab, gifts = $3000
if that is not your cuppa tea I suggest you have mass wedding share the costs with all other prides and grooms. Something similar to the one that happened last year in somaliland, where twenty-one couples have shared a joint wedding. Where the traditional lavish celebrations are increasingly unaffordable at a time of economic slump.
The function was held at a hotel in Hargeisa, capital of Somaliland, and was arranged by Telsom, a telecoms company that employs all the bridegrooms.

Too all the superficial people who insist on buying new stuff for their marriage, or in other words, seeking validation from fellow Somalis! I pity all of you. The success of your marriage does not hinge on new material possessions. These days, many people see marriage as a consumption exercise, they have relegated companionship, respect, mutual understanding and loyalty to the periphery of their marriage. This could perhaps explain why there is high rates of divorce within the Somali community, particularly those in the diaspora.2ndtoNone wrote:new furniture, new paint, cleaning, etc = $12,000

To the poster, take control of your marriage and don't allow your wife to dictate how the money should be spent and allocated to buy material possession. Buy things that you absolutely need.
