Waraqa testified to the prophethood of Muhammad( saw) before he died and Najashi also accepted Islam. SO there are no comparisons to be made with modern christian sects, however similar to islam they appear in some aspects. Followers of judaism are probably closer Islam than most christian sects, but their deen is not accepted as they have rejected two prophets. This is the same with the individual your are describing. There is no let Allah judge here.

These things are actually very simple: Islam is the religion that Allah chose for all mankind and He won't accept anything else:

"Truly, the religion with Allah is Islam and whoever seeks a religion other than Islam, it will never be accepted of him, and in the Hereafter he will be one of the losers" (3:85)

So there are two groups of people: Muslims and kuffar.

And we all know that Allah sent His Religion and Laws for all mankind through His Messenger Muhammad SCWS and belief in him and the Qur'aan is obligatory for a Muslim and who rejects them kafara or disbelieved.

Kuffar include christians, jews, mushrikin etc and all of them will be kuffar until they believe in Muhammad SCWS and Qur'aan sent to him by Allah and other pillars of iman. Of course there are differences between these people, some of them are good like people you described and some of them are worse, like hindus. Still they all come under the same classification which is kuffar because they reject the Religion and the Messenger of Allah.

Waraqa bin Nawfal was a muwahhid before Prophethood and he recognized that Muhammad SCWS was a Messenger of Allah. Same thing with Najashi who became a Muslim.

Living by Tawhiid and staying away from all shirk without believing in Muhammad SCWS nowadays could be only accepted from someone who lives alone in baadiya far away from Muslims and never heard about Islam. And even with these kind of people (ahlul fitra), their xukm in THIS WORLD is that they are kuffar. You can't for example give Muslim women for them in marriage because they are not Muslims. Then on Yawmal Qiyama Allah will test them and they might be accepted.

But these kind of people who live among Muslims and hear about Islam and knowledge is in front of them for taking, they on other hand have the Xujja or evidence established against them if they don't accept Islam and they don't have any excuse in front of Allah.

Prophet SCWS said:

"By Him (Allah) in Whose Hand Muhammad's soul is, there is none from amongst the Jews and the Christians (of these present nations) who hears about me and then dies without believing in the Message with which I have been sent (i.e. tawheed), but he will be from the dwellers of the (Hell) Fire." (Muslim)

Now if we would say that only believing in one God and staying away from shirk would be enough to be saved then that would negate the Qur'aan, Laws of Allah and Muhammad SCWS because they wouldn't be needed at all.

Tell your friend a beautiful hadith from our beloved Prophet SCWS that three kind of people will get double rewards and one of them is a christian or a jew who is a true believer in his prophet, and then believes in Muhammad SCWS and becames a Muslim. This person will get double reward in front of Allah. This hadith is found from al Bukhari and Muslim.

I know but most people are in cities and are exposed to religion, technology. etc.

I heard from a Sheikh that all the people who never heard of god, the dumb, the blind & deaf, will all be gathered after everyone else is judged, then they will be told to go to hell, some will follow God's cammand and other's will challenge him asking why should they since they have never done anything? and all the ones who obeyed will be sent to heaven since they followed God's Word the same way they would of done on Earth & The ones who disobeyed will be sent to hell because they would of done the Same on Earth.
