Somaliland Development

Post by Samatr »

Why doesn't Somaliland develop places like this instead of building Hargeisa iyo galbeedka, can you imagine how much food could be made yearly with the right equipment.
I might be a bit biased because of I have some land there but that's besides the point.

For the same reason that Kenya does not preserve Ethiopia's habitat, the area is out of Somaliland's control. The region is Calmadow and its resources are fiercely protected by the autonomous Warsangeli community; they don't allow a single tree to be torn down for urban land clearance let alone charcoal. They're like the Masai of Somalia when it comes to their land. Below are more pictures of the area.

And I'm explaining to you that the government in Hargeisa can't just walk into another community's settlements and strip down their natural bushes to feed people 100 miles away, and with this comes commercial farming and you can imagine the whole population would be displaced soon enough, so expect that armed resistance is probably one of the reasons the government isn't there. The whole conflict in Galgala is about the same thing, the admin in Garowe wants to cordon the area for mineral exploration and the locals are fighting it. Also, you can't grow corn and shit in the mountains, this is basic knowledge, you can't feed the whole population on coconuts and the few crops that grow in high eleveation. :|

I'm pretty sure with the right equipment you can sustain some sort food, I just feel this land could be utilized for something other than just good scenery.
