Shirib,

All Countries are different and must be judged according to their own standards. In future, be careful not to subsume all countries under an American standard.

On the issue of the Somali currency, we need to perhaps clarify a few things.

Somali, unlike American, is an ethnicity that goes beyond the porous borders of 'Somalia'. Consequently, we need to distinguish the difference between a political construct and an ethnicity. With this in mind, its important we understand the exact extent to which the ineptly named 'Somali' currency has value and is used. Somalis in Somaliland, Kenya and Ethiopia do not currently for the most part use this inflation-ridden and worthless currency.

Things from the country of Somalia are referred to as Somali. Somali's in Kenya use a Kenyan currency, Ethiopia use Ethiopia, Djibouti use Djiboutian and the Somali's in America use American currency. So Somali currency is currency from Somalia. Its really not that hard of a concept.

You do realise there is no such thing as Somali Republic. The correct and technical name of 'Somalia' is Republic of Somalia.

SDM,

Somalia is not bad in the nonIkhwaani areas. During Ramadan things are quiet and people generally pleasant. My best moment was when I went for Friday prayers at the Cabdallah iyo Cawere mosque and had afuur with the Qaadriyah wadaads. The worst moment when the Ikhwani bidca and the iBlis Tahir Aweys started fighting before morning prayers but the Ahlu Sunnah Wal Jameeca repelled them, Alhamdullilah.

As for the business opportunities, there are a few. There are major construction projects happening in Xamar and if you can get a good subcontract there you can rake in some big bucks. In the craziness, there are great opportunities for the few, the brave and the greedy.

Marcass,

Somali shilling denotes the currency of Somalia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Somali_shilling

Shaab,

The Somali shilling is 34,000 to the USD 1

The term Somali generally refers to the natives of the Somali Republic from the Ras Caseyr to Ras Kiamboni. You should also be aware that the SOmaliland administration gets its funding from donor agencies as a part and parcel of the Somali Republic. If they were true Somaliland patriots, they would have rejected the funding that implied they are part and parcel of the Somali Republic.

The Hawalas and the diaspora are the only thing keeping the Somali Shilin afloat, because every time the diaspora sends money to Somalia, they are effectively buying Somali Shilins with Dollars/Euros. Fiat Currencies like the Somali Shilin are worth something because there is a demand for the currency, and since Somalia doesn't have a large export market, the Diaspora are effectively the main export of Somalia.
