Lets get this straight!
The term Salaf As-Salihiin means 'Righteous Predecessors'. They were the first three Generations of the prophet and immediately following him. No one denies this.
There is a segment of Muslim's who call them selfs "Salafs", "Salafi" etc. But undoubtably they are not from the first three generations becase they have been dead for over a millenieu (may Allah have mercy on them).
So question arises why do they call themselves "Salaf's", it is because they are "puritanical" movement that wished to go back to what they believed was the beliefs and practices of the Salaf As Salihiin. *Note the need to even have a puritanical movement is up for debate but will not be addressed here
*Note whether it is possible to even go back to the "salaf salahiin" practices without innovation is also up for debate, but will not be addressed here
The thing we have to understand is this; The present day usage of modern day "salafs" is a borrowed term to liken a modern movement to an undisputed authenticity and legitimacy of the past. But true Salaf As Salihiin (the first three generations) have absolutly nothing to do with this puritanical movement, and the Salafis are not and cannot be Salaf As Salhiin ever it is impossible.
Now that is cleared up, if you follow this puritanical movement (Salafs) and agree with it that is a matter of personal choice, this is not an exposition on what to believe or who to follow, but a clearing of terms that is often times easily confused.
Salafs are DEAD (aun), but there is a modern movement that borrows that term as an Ideological bridge.

Whats wrong with that?
Unless you celebrate mowlid or involved in other types of Bidca I don't see why you wouldn't want to have the same beliefs and practices as the Salaf-as-Salah.

Salafiyah comprise those who follow the example of the Prophet(pbuh) and his companions, and adhere to their principles, beliefs, and practices. They are part and parcel of Ahlu sunnah wal jamacaa
.
Although there is some weird cult like movement who also call themselves "salafi", with their own scholars and alienate themselves from the rest of the Ummah. I think some people confuse them with normal Muslims.
Also some deviant innovators use the term salafi as an insult and interchange it with Wahabi, Al wahab is one of the name of Allah. Applying the word “Wahabi” to those who adhere to correct belief and warning people against them is the way of the ignorant and biased. These people are confused.

See executive brother this is a misleading question.Executive wrote:Perfect_Order wrote: it is because they are "puritanical" movement that wished to go back to what they believed was the beliefs and practices of the Salaf As Salihiin. .

If you read my statement you will see that I worded it so that the "aim" (puritanical beliefs of the salaf As salihiin) is a condition of their subjective views (on what they believe to be correct). I do not talk about what is right or wrong.
So the reason your question is misleading is because it is based on a subjective view of what you think the salafs believed (I don't want to go into what they believed or not), so when you say "I don't see why you wouldn't want to have..." you put me into pre-defined (by you) positions; those of the salafs and those of bidca, and to not be able to see the limitations of these narrow positions is what leads people to be ignorant.

Neo-Salafis aka Rabee' al Madkhalis are a threat to even the sunnis. These people gave birth to the khawarij mentality. They hate the Muslims and love the disbelievers. They ask the people to pledge allegiance to the fat drunk bastard of Riyadh and claim that anyone who isnt under him will be condemned to Hell. These are the most sickening people around.

Re: Lets get this straight!
lol, i never saw someone claiming to be from the Salaf Assalih, but if one says in am a "Salafi' it means that he adhers the Salaf Assalih, just like if someone says that he's a Maliki he means he follows Imam Malik and doesn't mean that he is Imam Malik in person. When you say 'Sunni' it means that you ascribe yourself to the Sunna rather then being the Sunnah. And from a lingiustic point of view, it is possible in the arabic to ascribe yourself to a group of people or a place by pasting a 'ya' at the end like PO Al-AmriikiPerfect_Order wrote:The term Salaf As-Salihiin means 'Righteous Predecessors'. If a person says he/she is 'Salafi' it means they are a member of the Sunni offshoot sect 'As-Salafiyyah'.
