Since majority of the people are nomadic and farming and earn their living thru these means, there is a really danger that a devastating draught may occur. Keep your support to the families back home and pray to Allah that rainy season will come.

While many SNETTERs are living in the west, people should keep in mind that there are many Somalis back home whose livelihoods rely on the rainy season and unless rains season starts before at the end of December, 2010, things don't look good. Due to El-Nino, deforestation, and environment degradation, the rainy season was very much inconsistent in Somalia and there is a fear that these inconsistent rains may contribute to a new civil war in the country due to the many families who may have to abandon the countryside and move to cities and towns, and many destitute young men who would probably setup checkpoints in the roads in order to earn their living thru extortion.
Where in Somalia? The whole country or a few regions?
AS far as I know Northern, Eastern, and Central regions.
So, pretty much the barren regions

Somali nomads and farmers built water holes (or Berkedo in Somali) and that is what it is in their capacity to do si. There is a need to build huge water resorvoirs and that requires huge funding and enormous infrastructure. It is only effective states who can fund such massive projects. The problem in Somalia is the lack of pasture after the rainy system don't fall enough or don't fall at all. Animals cannot live on water only. They need a pasture so animals can survive on grazing that pasture. The way they deal with it in USA, Canada, and Europe is they start cutting the pasture during rainy system and save it for the draughts and for the winter season. The problem in Somalia is we don't receive as much rain as they recieve in the west so that doesn't seem to be an option. Zoning is the best approach where when the rainy season starts, people are forbidden from settling certain areas of the land and will only be settled after the next rainy season starts. When they moved to the new areas, the areas they settled in the past few months is closed for further grazing until the next season. Due to the nature of the Somali nomads, this requires the involvement of the state and strong enforcement mechanism.

Dawlad doesn't build 6 floor buildings, businessmen do. That's like if I said to you, leave your job and give your savings to the homeless. Free market isn't fair, it isn't meant to be. Those hotels at least give the nomads jobs so they can build their own houses.
