Al-Shabaab waa Dawlad, Al-Shabaab waa ahlu-jannah
That is what I hear from people back home.
I have relatives who recently left Nairobi and returned to the paradise that has come of Marka, Kismayo & Jamaame. They tell me business is better than ever before, they have round-the-clock protection and they are taxed next to nothing. They said if they need business help that Al-Shabaab provides technical support and even logistical solutions to get to the nearest markets. If local communities send letters of concern regarding road conditions or a lack of roads it is addressed the very next day and construction begins shortly thereafter at no direct cost to the public. People have even begun to regularly sleep in hammocks in their gardens because there is no crime whatsoever. Food prices have also hit record lows they tell me, as all of the major landowners have begun contracting businessmen to grow food for the local markets. Food production has become so abundant and overflowing that factories are being planned in all the major towns and ports for export; an extra dock had to be built in Marka for this purpose as well. Relatives now convince me that life is better today than pre-war, they say that self-sufficiency on this scale did not even exist before the war.
The business & social activities in southern Somalia are shrouded in a cloud of mystery to those with no connection there but an economy is burgeoning there and institutions are being built on a scale of efficiency and technical superiority that previous governments did not dare to build. Al-Shabaab waa dawlad, Al-Shabaab waa ahlu-jannah -- attests the voice of southern Somalia today.

It is common knowledge for anyone who has relatives in peaceful areas control by the islamists that they provide good governance. The issue is not about governance it is about thier ideology. These guys gave thier 100% allegiance and support to Al qaacida which most of the world is hunting down. Imagine if they somehow captured the whole country; their would most probably be harsh sanctions and it would be extremely difficult to freely travel from the country internationally.

Sanctions are overrated, especially for Muslim countries. The whole world sanctioned the Taliban regime but Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and the United Arab Emirates all fully recognized their government and numerous other states traded with them. Only the US and a few NATO states will sanction Somalia, China will go unabated in its trading practices. If Somalis make use of their resources and manpower and turn their country into a cash cow, it will provide enough financial incentive for anyone to venture there for riches. You still think of the world in a post-colonial UN/European dominated context, but the world is now run by the chinks and they could care less if Al-Shabaab was ritually breaking Mao posters, if given the proper dollar incentive the chinks will bless Shabaab. Money runs the world, and show anyone enough of it and they will ignore their greatest values. That will be Shabaab's weapon against detractors much the same way in the 90s when Sudan opened their borders to runaway Islamic radicals yet still received massive investment due to the financial incentive in ignoring those things. Unless NATO is going to invade Somalia full-out, European political moralism won't stop anyone anymore. Many countries do great with sanctions -- do Cuba and Iran look bothered? If worst comes to worst at least Somalis will be eating well, and at least North Korea will fill any gaps either militarily or economically.

There is a difference between harboring some alqaacida figures and fully giving allegiance to them. Even China is in the war on terror. You cannot compare Iran to Somalia.Monk-of-Mogadishu wrote:Sanctions are overrated, especially for Muslim countries. All of that is accomplished with meager resources. Wallaahi, any one who followed what took place is Southern Somalia would say Allahu Akbar the transformformation that took place in the South and parts of Central Somalia. One challenge you can ask the Somalis is have you seen any clan conflicts in areas controlled by Al-Shabaab? You won't and the reason is they have done their homework to reconcile all Somali clans under the area they control. Many Somalis who were in Kenya have moved back and started doing businesses in the South.
