British general claims al-Qaeda will never be defeated

Post by ToughGong »

The head of Britain's Armed Forces General Sir David Richards has stated that the west will be unable to defeat al-Qaeda.

Speaking to the Sunday Telegraph, he explained that the current war will not result in a victor in the traditional sense and asserted that in any case, this is not necessary.

"Do we need to defeat it [Islamist militancy] in the sense of a clear cut victory? I would argue that it is unnecessary and would never be achieved," he stated.

Instead, the process is about containment to enable people to enjoy secure lives - a goal which is achievable according to the general.

He also told the newspaper that "education and democracy" in addition to "upstream prevention" are the best weapons to use in the fight against al-Qaeda.
