There was a pecking order and Somalis were on top.

Nobody would mess with a somali, even older kids 2 to 3 grades above me would be scared shitless of a somali and would treat you respectfully.

Ofcourse this bieng emarat and a country full of immigrants, you will get the odd carab kid from egypt or bilad al sham who is new to the country and has never interacted with somalis and does not know his "place".
Usually these interaction get really ugly with the poor kid getting badly beaten up or even hospitalized and the police getting involved.

They are very rare sadly not much fun isnt it..

I had one memorable incident...
it was more funny than offensive and i felt sorry for the poor guy at the end...

It was an indian kid from 2 grades above me who was in the school bus with me, on the way home.
apparently this kid was new and had just come from an all indian school to our multinational one and he has never come across a somali.

at first i was shocked , how dare he, the insolence........
but then i realised how out of depth the kid was and i told him that i would forgive him and be lenient on him if he bows down and kisses my feet like all indians should do..

since this was in public and with an audience and since there was a teacher on board, he was al bluster and bravado....

I backed down and then slowly went over to the conducter and driver and told them that i was going to that boys house and that they should drop me off with him. I told them that we have a project to do together...

When he got off i got off with him, sucker punched him, then kicked him while he was on the floor and i was unzipping my pants to pee on him
when i was tackled by a bystander and the bus conducter....

boy did i get in trouble...
nearly got suspended from school and just barley escaped assualt charges as i was only 14 and the kid was 16...
my father was upset, but he also showed the general racism everybody had, when he said it that i should have taken it easy he was just an indian.
To him even if the other was bigger than you and older he was nothing becuase he was an indian.

alxamdullah i outgrew that kind of racism....

but life in emarat back in the days was pretty kool...
and the somali name meant allot...
untill it was soiled by the new somalis that came after 1991...

Surpsingly i never experience any racism at all during my 7 years in Sydney, Australia..
In my university i was one of 5 black people 2 of which were exchange students on a short term.
The suburb i lived in had no black people other than our family and 1 other somali family...
The rest were mainly Anglosaxon australians, Greeks, Italians and Some Lebanese.

The white aussies directed thier racisma nd hatred towards the lebanese and asians to them i was harmless and exotic even to the hick country folks.

I had to travel 20 mins by car to the nearest mosque and halaal resteraunts..

Yo what school did you go to?

I grew up in the same city and started school at Al Worood and then Shuweefaat in the 90s before immigrating over. From what I remember, life was good back then. I had a similar encounter with a an indian student. I was sat bored on the bus going back home and this indian kid quietly reading a book in front of me, to this day I do not know why I did it, but I found myself hitting him as hard as I could right at the top of his head, to sit back quietly at my chair. He did not even cry or anything, he gave me this innocent but baffled look and some girls sitting at the back of the bus started yelling that i hit him because he had 'silky smooth' hair!

dude im pretty sure our families know each other.. habar jeclo and in abudhabi!!
I went to al worood between 86 and 87.. , my Kindergarden and Al worood was very arab and by 2nd grade i had a syrian/Palestinian accent.. no kidding
3 to 6 went to this small british school called Al rabeec, most of the students were either british cadaan or british arabs and our Headmistress was
a british women that was a convert..
by 7 th grade i began to prefer english to arabic, and my arabic accent changed from gay syrian/shaami to khaleeji which was more masculine.
  alxamdulilah...
Abudhabi is a small place i am sure i know you, or your friends..

The incident i mentioned was at my last school in the UAE Cambridge High school..
Sounds very british doesnt it, it was part of the varkey group franchise that ran all those different Indian schools but they decided to develop a different brand
to appeal to a wider audience...., this was a very multicultural school, looking back i am still surprised by the different countries of origin.
from czech, to your typical Indian, Pakistani, different sorts of arabs, somalis, Sudanis, canadians, americans, and your Brits ofcourse..
Wow.. small world isnt it. Not only from Abudhabi, Habarjeclo, but Muse Abokor and Barre Adraxman too!! I remember fat miss Caabid the principle at the school, she was a bitch. I know the Cambridge high you're talking about, it was based in Musafah wasnt it? I remember seeing the students in them big buses mostly asleep on the bus everyday and I would wonder how long it took them to get there, I had this idea that Musafah was a far far away town! :D Alworood in particular was a dangerous place I thought, I remember my brother beating up this little kid in his class, they were both around 5-6 and things turning ugly pretty quickly, apparently, he was the son of the then advisor of Shaykh Zayid or something and I remember seeing staff at the school visibly shaken.

Al Shueefaat on the other hand was a fucked up place, a lot of the rejects would choose this school and spend all their time causing trouble. I mean, teenage pregnancy was not unheard of and that. It was a truly international place though, I mean, one of my best friends there were from Mexico, Lebanon, Japan, Scotland.. it was crazy melting pot.

I dont know why but I have never developed an accent in Arabic, it seems I have developed a random mixture of phrases and words and I usually talk according to the other person's origins, I can mimic accents pretty easily and I think its because I grew up listening to many different accents and dialects.

I don't recollect any act of racism whether overt or covert. Exactly the way I think. If I had the choice to be from any other race on earth, I would pick somali 100 hundred times. To me the worst thing on earth is to be not muslim, then not somali.
