can you tell me about oman and zanzibari rule over the somali coast.
for some reason the somali coast was always dominated by foreigners, like persians, omani arabs, italiyans, british, and yemenis
from bossasso al the way to malindi, I have a feeling that omanis had a semi colonial rule over long periode of time.
am i wrong to assume that coastal somalis have been under foreign rule before the coming of europeans, and the consept of somali ownership of land on the coast was a concept that developed after the coming of the europeans.
the coastal somalis where not like the interior somalis, for examble the interior somalis had clear grassing land so if people entered it was noticed, but for some reason the coastal regions are not like that.
I have seen your maps, highlighting omani rule over somali coast can you tell me more about it pleas

James Dahl talks out of his ass. The only foreigners before colonialism who ruled Somalia were the Omanis and they only ruled a few enclaves along the coast of Benadir, Marka, and Baraawe as well as the Swahili coast. The Ottomans also ruled up to Zeila for a few generations, and even the Russian Empire briefly had a colony in Djibouti. The Portuguese had a trading post in southern Somalia's coast as well. But that's it. There were no Persians or Yemenis or Chinese who ruled Somalia historically.

Oman never directly ruled anywhere in Somalia, it was all indirect. The Sultan basically just told everyone else to back off. I think they might have collected a bit of tribute from Mogadishu but probably no more than a ceremonial tribute.
This worked for a while until Zanzibar itself was taken over by the British, then they sold the rights to the Zanzibar protectorate to Italy, and things went downhill for the Somali coast from there.

I have the lineage of Sultan Maxamuud Cali Shire on my website, along with a semi-complete tree of Maxamuud Harti in general. A Warsangeli fellow with some ties to the Reer Garaad helped me put it together a few years ago.muftaax wrote:James what do you know of the Maakhiri Sultanate and their Southern colony?

Garaad Hassan (Xamargale) had a kingdom in Southern Somalia.

I'd heard that he was in the south, that's where he got his nickname.
I don't know if he had a kingdom or not, Warsangeli wasn't very big at the time.

Warsangeli at the time was probably around the same size as a mid-size Hawiye in the region. Xamargale had a kingdom that spawned outside of Xamar up to Brava.
However the aspect of Southern Maakhiri history is rarely glorified as they are confined to today, Jubbas-Bay-Bakool.

From Xamargale to Warsangeli is only 5 generations, there aren't enough generations for the entire Warsangeli clan to be more than maybe a few hundred people at the very most.
Also he probably didn't live so far south, his nickname is Xamargale after all.
