Somalia - 20 Years On Winners and Losers
Somalia - 20 Years On Winners and Losers
The civil war changed Somalia's political and class landscape. Like any other revolution, this change in Somalia has its winners and losers
Winners:
1- Isaaq:
This qabil is one of the largest in Somalia and has always had a great history of being one of Somalia's elite tribes. Although there history is shiny prior to Siyaad Barre, they were dominated and oppressed by the military dictatorship of Siyaad Barre who came from darood tribe. After Siyaad's downfall, this qabil formed Somaliland and enjoyed peace and economic growth over past decade or so. SOmaliland is well and prospering.
2- Majeerteen:
Another qabil who was at centre of SOmalia's political arena for long time. Like the Isaaq tribe, Majeerteen suffered a lot under Siyaad Barre's regime and lke the Isaaq tribe, Majeerteen now control an enormous section of the country with laws, guidelines, peace and a actually functioning government.
3- Habr Gedir:
Unlike the above two tribes, Habr gedir's success came and began in the 1990s and rose vertically upwards and again, unlike the above tribes, Habr gedir’ peoples left their ancestral dry and rough land and started to inhabit SOmalia's “bread” “basket” region known as "the two rivers". Habr gedir people now spectacularly control much of SOmalia's economy, including large cities such as Kismayo & Marka. Also control most of Xamar and not only do they* control SOmalia's economy the new TFG is also again headed by a Habr gedir.
Losers:
1- Marexaan:
Anyone who grew up in SOmalia in 80’s will remember how this nomadic tribe transformed into a very powerful kingdom. Some historians say Marexaan people were camel herders who were implanted in big cities such as Mogadishu by their leader Mohamed Siad barre. They enjoyed very long 30 years of using national property illegally. They looted Somalia's national asset and anyone who tried to stop them was either killed or arrested. it was a ruthless kingdom. Every good thing must end one day. Now, that once powerful tribe in disarray and its people who lived in luxury are getting hard time adjusting their lives in the diaspora or in refugee camps.
Abgaal:
This is one of the largest Somali tribes who inhabit greater Mogadishu area. Lack of good leadership and clear vision made Abgal one of the poorest tribes in Somalia. Their strong hold is North Mogadishu where standard of living is much inferior to south Mogadishu which is controlled by Habar Gedir.
Lose/Win situation:
1- Maymay. This pastoral tribe was the center of Somalia's man made famine in early 1990s. The capital of the region was nicknamed "The Death City" by western journalists who showed the world how a man made famine could devastate people. This famine triggered the American Invasion. Things are improving now, this tribe's armed faction worked with Ethiopia to regain lost land to habargedir and now controls much of its land.
Over all, every Somali person is a loser in one way or another in this civil war. Darood tribe was was subjected to an ethnic cleansing which included rape and killing by Hawiye in the early days of the civil war. But the most killing took place when Habargedir started to use farce against other hawiye clans such as Hawadle, Murursade and Abgal.

Re: Somalia - 20 Years On Winners and Losers
When the 1969 revolution happened, only 5% of Somalia's population was urban and even less literate. I never got the whole special camel herder card against Marehan but I guess we have to mold the Somali story into the rags to riches narrative popularized all over the world to put the greatest success in context.
Well, the rest of what you said about most other tribes doesn't hold weight either, but I take special offense at "Isaaq clan with great history". Isaaq had zero history before the 20 year Sayid Mohammad Abdulle Hassan rebellion against the British (and they factor in negatively in that era) and had zero after.

I think it is a fair reflection on all the clans. But what do you think we can do from here. What does the next 20 years hold?
Will the 3 loser be the 3 winners in 20 years time? Maybe I already see progress with them..

Re: Somalia - 20 Years On Winners and Losers
When you see one Somali town or village that is not fed by the WFP, please do come back to us about winners and losers in the most poorest, least developed country on earth.
Re: Somalia - 20 Years On Winners and Losers
Another set of winners is the burgeoning diaspora population who now enjoy opportunities and standards of living that they could never have attained within Somalia. The biggest losers are all those suckers who got left behind.

wasn't isaaq the first to introduce the use of gold, silver and other foreign currencies for trade exchange to somali nation!.
xitaa wakhtigaa ka hor, when somali economy was parter economy, anaga uunbaa ahayn kuwa ugu cad cad marka ay timaado ganacsiga, that is why somalis gave us the nick name Idoor. historically we were the richest somali clan, we are know and nothing will change till somal_qiyamah. live with it sxb.
sxb, wakhti u hayo in aan qoro maqaal ku saabsan tariikhda duriyada, kaliya waxaad i waydiisaa kaalinta aanu taariikhiyan kaga jirnay fanka iyo suugaanta iyo kobcinta dhaqanka iyo afka somaaliga. waxa aad i waydiisaa kaalintii muhiimka ahayd ee afartameeyadii, kontaneedyadii, aanu ka qaadanay abuurida, kobcinta iyo shaac_bixinta muusiga casriga ah ee soomalida.

Lol@Voltage
In another thread his hating the Majerteen insisting his tribe has achieved more in both pre-Kacaan and post-Kacaan. The truth is simple to judge and anybody with a functioning brain or that HAS visited the motherland will see the different contrasts when entering each qabils region. How can Gedo the Marexaan degaan be compared to Puntland, or Puntland to Somaliland.

How can there be winners when you had your mosque used as a toiled by Amhar iyo Tigre?
Re: Somalia - 20 Years On Winners and Losers
The whole Somalia thing is one big UN project.Voltage wrote:When you see one Somali town or village that is not fed by the WFP, please do come back to us.
Winners:
Countless NGOs
UN Agencies
Weapons manufacturers
Food Export Companies
US, Canada and some EU cab companies
the list goes...
Losers:
Every Somali - lakin one can argue the list of losers can be sorted by severity.

Re: Somalia - 20 Years On Winners and Losers
Isaaq are the winners, because they were nothing before the 90's era. Now they have freedom..
MJ were looser during siyaads time also, however were big winners before siyaad. and now winners too after siyaad, however much more succesful before siyad period.
Looser are definitely Mareexan who went from rags to riches to rags again.
Haawiye always have been loosers and still are... Violance and anarchy is what they know. and they will never stop, thats why they will remain loosers.
