The Nigerians who are in the West are very smart because they are the creme of the crop in their societies. They are not reflective of the wider Nigerian population. These people were also smart back home in Nigeria because they were intelligent, and that's why they were granted the visas required to immigrate.Shirwac_1 wrote:voltage,

Being healthy will increase your IQ by several points, but the bulk of your intelligence comes from your inheritance.gurey25 wrote:You want to increase the intelligence of the population?
Easy provide adequate nutrition to everyone.
Lack of nutrition causes brain damage in children and is responsible for a large drop in IQ rates..
that starving glue sniffing kid in our slums could be the next einstien, if you could simply proide him with a home and a warm meal.

where do you get your stats from? somali students in north america alone are in 4 figures if not more?We need intelligent co-ethnics in order to advance as a soceity. The number of Somali people with advanced degrees is quite low, numbering in a few hundred at the most,![]()
Merely attending a college/university and attaining a bachelors degrees is not enough. How many Somali students have PhD's in the hard sciences or are in medical school? I'll tell you what, it's not in the 4 figures.
even a chinese educator would frown upon such idea.if kid's intelligence was to be judged at a tender age then what you gonna do with late bloomers?1.) Administer IQ tests to all children in Somalia and submit the results to a National Education Council.
Intelligence is an interplay between environment and genes. Kids are born with their genes.
thats a no brainer, every country in the third world does it now.and all the past somali governments did it,heck even the weak TFG gets scholarships in hundreds.2.) Kids scoring in the 99th percentile should be selected for special government scholarships paying for their education
abroad from secondary school through university. The Government should set up a special fund for this.
When did Somalia's government ever select the brightest young students and give them special attention? I don't mean just a university scholarship, I mean placing them in better schools from day one.
and your proof is ?Intelligence is at least 50% hereditary.
There dozens of studies on this and hundreds of articles online. Can you bring me even one legitimate source saying that intelligence is not partially hereditary? Do you honestly think that everybody is born with the exact same intellectual capacity?
false, all scholarships were suppose to go to the samrtest,at least on paper, but it was always, and is today distributed based on neotism, favorism, tribalism and all the other bad isms.thus, the problem is in the excution and not in the policies themselves.Previous Somali governments have allocated scholarships based upon tribe and other nonsense,
Let me amend my previous recommendation-children of powerful elites should be barred from entering the program. I'm sure there are tens of thousands of highly intelligent Somali kids from the middle to lower classes who can benefit from this program.

Can't believe you think you are having a legitimate discussion. I have been in enough of those curved classes to know outcome is proportional to effort, it is 90% effort. That is why school admissions now have a holistic approach and things like grade trend are major considerations. Grade trend is for example of a student came in a little behind but was able to catch up and succeed. You know, that one kid in your class everyone thought was a dummy but because he spend 5X you did studying the material, he came to understand it better than you. Also, Albert Einstein would have never made it through your rigid, unscientific method of deducing intelligence since he was a terrible student in his youth and many, including his teachers, considered him not bright.union wrote:
Improving the educational system supporting all Somali kids should obviously be a priority, but that will take many years and a lot of money. All I am suggesting is finding the kids who already very bright naturally and funding their education abroad so they can return and be the professionals Somalia needs. I am sure that you as science student will realize that modern research supports the fact that intelligence differs between individuals, and I'm not talking about the intelligence required by average individuals to preform average functions, but rather the intelligence required to do well in a curved science class.

What Albert Einstein are you talking about? I'm talking about the guy who mastered differential and integral calculus before he was 15 and was the top of his class during primary school, not to mention proving the Pythagorean theorem on his own. That Albert Einstein, even in light of his adolescent behavioral programs, would have certainly made it through my method.
Do you have any proof supporting your assertion that intelligence is mostly (if not all) the result of environment? Yes or no?
Also, how do you reply to the Indiana kid who was recently on the news for tackling complex physics problems, and who is now being courted for a paid research position at the age of 12. Do you agree that he was born naturally intelligent, or do you think that the environment of his lower class family helped him reach his current level?

Re: One way of advancing our society
As a hole I think this theory is pretty much hogwash. Not only is it unrealistic but it is grossly unnecessary.
First of all with the way The Human mind works people have different strengths/talents in certain subject areas as compared to weak areas (relative to their strength in certian subject areas). Some people are very apt at memorizing, Some are better at understanding. Some people excel at the public speaking/presentation some are better with more analytical subject areas like Engineering, Math, Computer Science/IT and others. Yet some of these "geeky" Engineer/Math gurus will not be able to for the life of them stand in front of a executive board and be able to effectively and confidently make a presentation in front of them, while some people can do that easily. What makes a society more "educated" is the value and weight that society collectively puts on education. Take India a very educated and advanced society for example. At My University who's Engineering/IT factulty is dominated with Indian Professors, I've had casual off the record converstions with some noteworthy Professors from that Country that have won awards about the Indian Education system status. They were laughing telling me how much of a ridiculous assumption it is that Indians are "smarter" than Americans or other races, which is what the arguement a lot of American students would make when struggling with Math/Engineering. He talked about how the difference between Indians and other races is how Education is viewed there. In a nation of over a billion people with scarce recourses, kids are taught very early in their childhood if You do not study Your ass off, You will live a life of severe poverty. Its this mentality that India is today the leader in Software Engineering/Development and is the source of skilled labor all over the world. You can bring similar examples in Japan.
"Smart" or not smart the student's motivation/drive is what will ultimately give Him success in academia and eventually be able to let that person achieve accolades. One will NOT be able to get by Academia if they are not willing to sit down, and put in the time plain and simp;le. One will not be able to understand Integration in Calculus just because He's "Smart". I saw You make a reference to the Somalis who went to Somalia to fight for Shishkabab. Yes I have noticed that Somalis in America/West have been a major dissapointment (Especially the males) when it comes to education. This in my opinion is due more to the fact that unfortunately Somalis being refugees, and having to take whatever public housing is available to them were put in low income, crime ridden, horrible school system areas that were not conducive at all towards a young Man being able to succeed academically. I think putting Somalis in better neighobrhoods/school systems will immedietely be able to see dividends in America. As for in Somalia, I mean education right now is the least of their priorities when the most basic human necessities are unavailable.
All in all Your theory about selectively chosing who should be given a chance for an education and who shouldn't, by some selection process is ludicrious. Here in the States the way talent is recognized is through little stuff You wouldn't expect like Science Fairs, Book clubs, etc. once the talent is identified they're then put in more challenging, stimulating classes (Gifted and Talented) and it goes from there to Ivy League schools, post education (Masters) PhD, etc. but where did it all start? Those science fairs when the kid was 6-7 nobody thought of, but at the end of the day the credit goes to the Paren tof that child that challenged he/she to enter into it, put effort into it and it walloped to something special.

Re: One way of advancing our society
dint einstien nearly fail to pass high school?
The entire school system is not conducive to nurturing intelligence .
The entire education system should be overhauled, because we would lose too many bright minds to boredom..
Schools are today, more interested in molding the behavior of kids to conform to society and teaching is a secondary goal..
I think i am of average intelligence but i assure you that i didn't learn much through high school.
I was bored out of mind that i lost all interest in school, i hardly did any homework or study, but i got C's and B's with my minimal effort
I never even attended most of my classes and was penalized for attendance i still scored 81% in the percentile for the australian equivalent of the sat or matriculation..
It was only till the second year of University that i was challenged, and i had to work my ass off....
why cant we skipp the social engineering and spirit breaking phase of school and go straight to learning..
I am sure that you can get an illiterate geel jire child of moderate intelligence and make him pass both primary and highschool in under 2 years.

Murux,
You nailed this one. There is no substitute for hardwork and self-motivation. Simply putting students into world-class universities is not the solution because if that was the case, then the Arab World would be a bastion of human civilazation and intellectual achievement.

as some sort of a progressive Arab leader, but I always knew that to be phony. He is now outdoing his disturbed father in both lunacy and oppression.
There are thousands of Arab kids in Harvad, Cambridge, Oxford and et al that are trained to be the future of their countries with paid tuition and monthly stipends but all they ever do is get drunk in low-class clubs and salivate on the sight of the ugliest of White chicks. I swear some of them will live PaidMonk a good ass Run for His money. Lol

I beg to differ. I've been out of school and in my career for a little while now. It is the interaction, interpersonal dealing, being able to work with different people and social skills, social behavior that enable one to leverage their academic, intellectual success into the real world Where they will have to creatively relay and communicate their expertise to people across different spectrums and levels of society. Believe it or not, there actually was sort of a method to this madness that I used to think HS, College was because sometimes in My workplace I find Myself almost in school type scenarios all over again like Group Projects (Working on a urgent task/project with coworkers) public speaking in front of a professor/students (presenting something in a meeting) and other little social skills You picked up in the school system but never thought would come in handy. Btw, like I said earlier for the creative, advanced students You speak of I don't know how it is in Your Country but in the US We have Advanced Placement classes, Gifted and Talented classes, etc. for those types of students that need a bigger challenge.
Roving Madness,
Excellent example. These Guys from the Middle East go to the most expensive, prestigious private schools yet have nothing to show for it. I remember meeting a Saudi Business MS degree Holder who couldn't even explain some basic world trade questions I had, and I don't even know business
