Is New Ethiopian Invasion of Somalia on the Horizon??
Ethiopia buys Ukrainian tanks [/size
Published: June 9, 2011 at 3:37 PM
KIEV, Ukraine, June 9 (UPI) -- Ethiopia is in discussions with Ukraine to buy more than 200 T-72 tanks.
The deal is projected to be worth more than $100 million, Ukrinform news agency reported Thursday.
Ukrspecexport SC, the Ukrainian state-controlled arms exporter, stated that its deal with Ethiopia's Defense Ministry for 200 T-72 tanks is one of its largest contracts since the company's establishment in the wake of the collapse of the Soviet Union in December 1991.
The T-72 tank was originally produced in the Soviet Union in the 1970s and widely exported to African, Asian and Middle Eastern states as one of the Soviet Union's premier weapons systems.
The Ukrspecexport SC export variant contains a modernized propulsion system, upgraded guided weapons and an improved armoring system of both the turret and the tank's battle chassis for improved battlefield survivability.
Ukrspecexport officials said they are hopeful that the size and the magnitude of the Ethiopian order will have major economic and social impact in attracting orders for the Ukrainian defense establishment. Even if immediate additional business isn't forthcoming, Ukrspecexport SC said it expects further orders for repairs and upgrades of the tanks supplied to Ethiopia.

Re: Is New Ethiopian Invasion of Somalia on the Horizon??
Just few months before Ethiopian and the western invasion of Somalia in 2006, Ethiopia bought 150 tanks from North Korea. After those tanks were delivered to Ethiopia, and the training of the troops with the new tanks took place in 2 months, the invasion was launched to a nation that has no standing army.
Today, Ethiopia is buying 200 T-72 tanks from Ukraine, and new artillery and defense systems from Israel. Most of the money, if not all of it, is coming from the 2-billion US Dollars aid money that is provided by the USA and EU. Ethiopian military is being strengthened when Somalia is not allowed to form an effective government, when the whole country is under complete arms embargo, and where the take-over of Mogadishu, the Somali capital, by a Somali government is something that gives nightmares to certain regional and global powers.
It seems the attrition rate against AMISOM troops is skyrocketing, and the pressure is building on certain circles. Since most of the battle tanks that Ugandan troops use is T-65 and they have lately been getting taken-out, it could be the time to upgrade for more advance weapons. The challenging question is do the Somalis who are obsessed with petty thing and clannish mentality know or understand how Somalia as a country i undermined?

You seriously think Ethiopia needs to buy more weapons to capture Somalia? They can capture wadanka dhan in 24 hours if they had someone to finance the expedition.
Re: Is New Ethiopian Invasion of Somalia on the Horizon??
Abdisamad, they are around the border area but they facing some challenges.
Murax, they wouldn't have left if they could capture in 24 hours. They could come in and staying is different. Since most rpg in Somalia is 2 and 7, I think they need the upgraded tanks, which have the armour that can resist the RPG7 and RPG2.
On my end, something is fishy on this whole arms-buying spree that the Ethiopians are doing. Some say they are preparing for a war with Egypt, but I think it is all ballooney. It seems to me it is all about Somalia, and could be a new conquest!

Re: Is New Ethiopian Invasion of Somalia on the Horizon??
Udun, it is possible but it may have more to do with this [link below] than with Somalia. Their interests in Somalia are not currently under threat. AMISOM and their pawns in Mogadishu should be able to secure their interests for them at the time being.

Bro they left because of the economy collapase of 2009. There was no more Uncle Sam money for the useless adventure. Runti laakin right now Soomalidu waxaa ku dhacay dhacfi weyn, there is no way they can really resist a Amxaaro Army.
