The Earth's Core, ... Still Hot?
This question has bothered me for some time so I thought it time to let it out.
What keeps the Earth's Core hot?
It's surrounded by water and got ice caps on it, and the heat from the sun can't be keeping it hot. Why doesn't the earth go cold inside and turn to solid rock. It just doesn't seem scientifically logical.

LilTrigger,
The earth is STILL cooling off from heat generated from its formation. The earth was formed by the massive bombardment of meteorites and comits. The high velocity of these incoming objects created immense heat, taking billions of years to cool. With these meteorites and comits were elements like Iron (Fe), mostly, and Silicate (Si), about 10%. That is why the earth's core is all Iron. Its solid with temperature of 4300 degrees Celsius. The inner core is solid due to immense pressure exerted on it.
Surrounding the solid inner core is molten Iron core (source of volcano lavas). It is melted Iron becuz of the extremely high temperature of the inner core. The molten/liquid core is surrounded by mantle, which is also surrounded by earth's crust.
Lastly, the earth's magnetic field is due to due to its Iron core (molten Iron not solid Iron).
