These distinctions were not created out of thin air, there are differences between Muslims politically and religiously.

They dont make a distinction between an ordinary Muslim who works 9-5 and does nobody harm, and a lunatic in a cave somewhere, who they had on their payroll back in the day.

In their eyes you are just as guilty as the next Muslim.

I think most people draw a distinction between normal modern Muslims and radical sects devoted to terror, especially the government.

Are these words intended to divide Muslims or to avoid lumping the good guys with the bad ? I for one want to be able to verbally condemn al Awlaki for treason against his country of citizenship without inciting a pogrom against my local mosque. Do you believe all Muslims should answer his call to jihad against the great Shaitan? If so, then you are among those whose citizenship in the West is probably hypocritical and inappropriate and dangerous for all concerned, and you need to be described by a different word.

The tribes are different that you may know them.

There are plenty of groups in the USA that call on the overthrowing of the government and other radical stuff... why doesn't the government shoot a drone at them?

Give credit where credit is due. Its worked quite well in dividing us into sections, but then again we were already divided so they just added more fuel to the fire.

These major divisions actually create a bad effect, as in it postulates that Islam is organised along the lines Evil and a good.

Fah,

Are you old enough to remember Ruby Ridge and Waco, and their aftermath, the Oklahoma City bombing?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oklahoma_City_bombing

What groups do you know currently who preach the overthrow of the government and are taking any practical steps in that direction? Talk is one thing, guns and bombs another.

Estarix,

It looks like you have figured it out. The division may not be exactly GOOD vs EVIL, but the non-Muslim world needs to know which groups are dangerous and to have appropriate words for discussing the differences. They want to catch Timothy McVeigh without wiping out the Wesleyan girls' volley ball team, if you catch my drift.

Actualy muslims of the world have been divided into four different group.

Fundamentalist = those who want to go back to the qur'an and the sunna.

Traditionalist = Those who also claim to holding on to the sunna while sticking only to some classical traditions,..wahabi, , hanafi, shafi'i, maliki, hanbali...

Modernist = those who want a new interpratation of the qur'an, islam and sunna. New world religion. (they want to join all religion, hold hand and sing kumbaya)

Secularist =

The goal is to prevent muslims from establishing a global identity and stop the khilafa coming back.
