I rarely write in Somali, i hate the double vowels thing and sometimes I was told I add extra letters to Somali words when I speak, other than those few things, my Somali is as good as my English.

With reading and writing, I'm pretty well at both. When it comes to speaking, English hands down.

That is fascinating. I would suggest you teach those around you.

I can speak Somali (informally) with no problems but when it comes to reading it, because of all the different ways people write, it tends to be a nightmare. I used to speak Arabic but I am losing it too.

My English far exceeds my Somali too, but I speak better Somali than most people who grew up in the west.
what little French and Arabic I learned throughout the years has dwindled away sadly.

Dream and curse, in English. Speak and write good enough in Somali, though.

I don't think most of the people here are being honest with themselves.
Runtii my english far exceeds my somali, for the fact that I have lived in the UK for 21 years of my life and the rest of my life (3 yrs) I was in a somali speaking country.
My somali speaking is competent (pretty good for someone who never learnt somali in school or brought up in a somali speaking country) but not fluent. Reading and Writing are also competent, funnily I only learnt to write somali within the last 10 years, reading is also decent up to when I read songs and poems that's when I can't understand zilch
finally, this is the score I would give myself (1 being lowest, 5 being highest):
------------ English ------ Somali
Reading ---- 5 --------------- 3.5
Writing ----- 5 --------------- 4.5
Speaking ---- 5 ---------------- 4
Total -------- 15 -------------- 12

I speak/write several languages. If I limit my analyses to the Somali and English languages, I am of the opinion that I suck at both of them. My spoken Somali transcends dialect boundaries and depends on whom I am addressing and in the process becomes incomprehensible. My English suffers from the liability of being too" academic" and too influenced by the East african way of speaking it. When I visit the UK, the only people that I can converse with are academics (read: upper echelon of society).

I would say I'm fluent in both English and Somali; though I need to work on my Somali vocabulary. Reading Somali is getting easier for me but I found it very difficult at first. It took me a year to learn to speak english properly including having the local accent. Now you wouldnt be able to distinguish me from someone who was born here.

My English has the upper hand speaking wise, however when it comes to writing it, I'd say their just about the same.
