Why young couples aren't getting married - they fear the ravages of divorce

By Damien Gayle

19th December 2011

Young couples in the U.S. are holding back from taking the plunge and getting married because they are worried about suffering the strains of a divorce, research has shown.
More than two-thirds of the cohabiting couples questioned admitted they were worried about the social, legal, emotional and economic consequences of marriage breakup.
Women who were less well-off in particular expressed doubts about the 'trap' of marriage, fearing it would be hard to free themselves if things went wrong.
But middle-class couples were more positive about the prospect of wedding bells ringing and viewed cohabitation as a stepping stone to eventual life-long partnership.
In contrast, women from lower-income gropups feared that getting married could lead to extra domestic responsibilities, but few benefits to counteract them.

The study, carried out by researchers from Cornell University, also found working class couples were more likely to view marriage as 'just a piece of paper', that made no difference to their existing relationship.
They were twice as likely to admit fears about being stuck in marriage with no way out once they were relying on their partners' share of income to get by.

The study, 'The Specter of Divorce: Views from Working and Middle-Class Cohabitors', is published in the journal Family Relations.
It is co-authored by Sharon Sassler, Cornell professor of policy analysis and management, and Dela Kusi-Appouh, a Cornell doctoral student in the field of development sociology.
The authors hope that their findings could help pre-marital counselors to better tailor their lessons.
