During the British colony, there were Jewish businessmen in Berbera. They used to have shops and were suppliers to the British colonial establishment. They all departed with the British colonialists. That is what I heard from folks who were Berbera at that time.

In 1972 after Somalia joined the Arab Leaugue, the Somali Governmment deported two Jewish men who had Italian nationality from Somalia. In addition, Somali Government always had its suspicions of jews existing within the Shashi community. These suspicians existed because after the 1967 war and the defeat that the Arab forces suffered, many of the Arab and Islamic world governments decided to know the Jews in their midst, since many of the military secrets given to Israel were attributed to high ranking Jewish militry officers who claimed to be Arabs and Muslims within the Egyptian, Syrian, Lebanese, and Jordanian armies. The son-in-law of President Jamal Abdelnasir was an example.

In the late 1980s, I remember Somalis in Merca Caddey city talking about members of Shashi community who were Jewish. One of them had a restaurant next to the movie theatre. There were also others who had shops in downtown Merca Caddey. As a matter fact, I remember people talking about small house where they claimed the Jewish folks prayed. They called it temple. These members of that community claimed that they originated from Yemen and Iraq, and one of them was my classmate.

The Somali government did not bother them at that time because of the relationship between Somalia and USA.

So, yes, there were Jews within the Shashi and Gibil Cad communities but their number was not big. They remained secretive due to the nature of Somali attitude towards Jews and wars ranging between Israel and Arab/Muslims in the Middle East.

To end, I am very surprised by the lack of knowledge many Somalis in SNET had about Somalia in the past

Udun, that is very intersting information though I was looking for information that pre-dates before 1920's in Berbera.

Would not you say though the Jewis had always been safe within muslim communities, perhaps the relationship of the two communties deterioted with the creation of Isreal ( as one expected)?
The Muslim world was a safe heaven for yuhuuda when they were being presucated in the rest of the world particularly in earope. I do not think it is anything to dow tih the relationship between the former somali government and the US which was not that long anyway.
