Somaliland to introduce new currency notes
Hargeisa, January 15, 2012 (Somalilandsun) - The imminent introduction of these notes into circulation is expected soon following the arrival at the central bank in Hargeisa of a large consignment of the notes from the contracted British printer.
Somalilanders who are used to the 100 & 500 notes are wondering what effect the new notes will have on their livelihoods as the mere mention of the new notes arrival has seen the dollar rise heavily against the local shilling.
Delivery of the bank new bank notes late last week has seen the rate of exchange of a dollar rise as high as to 6,500 as opposed to 5,700 early last week. This rise has continued to elicit a rate fluctuating between 6,300 and 5,800, almost on an hourly basis.
While Somalilanders are tired of carrying around large bank notes and thus welcome the introduction of the bigger value currency notes, worries bound as to what effect the new notes will have on the economy.
