Somali Envoy Accuses Western Nations of Resource Greed

Somalia’s Envoy in Egypt Abdullahi Hassan Mahamud today accused the United Nations and the Western world of only intervening in Somalia to profit from the nation’s plentiful and under-exploited resources. He additionally pointed the finger at the Arab states, whom he is sent to delegate with, for allegedly watching Somalia’s suffering and doing nothing substantial to support the broken nation and fellow Arab League member.

He stated that while some Arab states stepped up to support Somalia in its twenty-year struggle, the majority did not pay mind at all. The envoy additionally added that he sat down with many Arab leaders but few had any genuine thoughts on the issues in Somalia, with most waiting for the American protocol instead of taking action on the war-torn state’s grievances.

Hassan also accused the United Nations of not doing its job as a humanitarian organization, and said that the recent London Conference on Somalia was not about genuine care for Somalia or its people, but rather an opportunity for Western nations and their firms to exploit the nation’s oil and mineral reserves.
