Puberty Before Age 10: A New Normal?

Post by waryaa »

Image
One day last year when her daughter, Ainsley, was 9, Tracee Sioux pulled her out of her elementary school in Fort Collins, Colo., and drove her an hour south, to Longmont, in hopes of finding a satisfying reason that Ainsley began growing pubic hair at age 6. Ainsley was the tallest child in her third-grade class. She had a thick, enviable blond-streaked ponytail and big feet, like a puppy’s. The curves of her Levi’s matched her mother’s.
Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, Kaiser Permanente of Northern California and Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York — published another study in Pediatrics, finding that by age 7, 10 percent of white girls, 23 percent of black girls, 15 percent of Hispanic girls and 2 percent of Asian girls had started developing breasts.

gurey, I think it also has something to do with diet and body fat. Look @ the stat: blacks 20%; Asians 2%. Asians are always skinny.

qorexeey, are those girls short now? one of the side effects is that the girl will end up being shorty in their adulthood. If this trend continues, American women will get shorter and shorter.

Genitically Modified Food and all the chemicals that are put in plants to market the produce quicker and more frequently is the problem. Fruits have been made bigger, brighter in colour yet tasteless all due to chemicals. Add the problems caused by pesticides to the equation and you get children morphying into adults by age 6! Thanks to the greed of the agribusiness industry! No wonder the organic produce industry is booming although what is labelled 'organic' needs to be monitored.

These kids are fed with food thats chemicalized , with anti biotics and other drugs like growth hormones. Its no wonder that they are hitting puberty much earlier than usual.

Nowadays, it is becoming the norm for adolescents to hit puberty well before the age of 9. Some even get it before the age of 7. Soon, it will not be that unusual. Could this be a sign that humans are still evolving? :(

There are several reasons for precocious puberty. Some of the obvious factors that contribute to pre-mature puberty are diet, lifestyle, environment but recent studies show there is causal relationship between exposures to chemical that imitate estrogen and precocious puberty.

There is correlation between early start to menstruation to a preeminent danger of breast cancer. Additionally, girls who go through puberty early have lower self-esteem and a bad body image. They are also more likely to involve in precarious behaviors which can end up in unintended pregnancies.

I mentor elementary and middle school girls and I have notice that girls who blossomed early are very self-conscious about the way they look and they always seem to isolate themselves from the rest of the crowd.

It deals a lot with the child's life I know that is too broad but what I mean by it is that it deals on her level of activity if she is very active and eats a lot of the junk and non nutritional foods that child will be more likely to hit puberty at a younger age then if she were less active and eating nutritious foods. This is why so many of the American girls hit puberty then those let's say in asia and Africa - I did a psych study on this in my psych class :)

GM foods, chemicals in the environment like bisphenol A (xenoestrogen), growth hormones, childhood obesity, etc.
