Ladies do you remember your D-vitamin?
Lck on D-vitamin is one of the most common illnesses in the somali community amongst diabetes; living in countries where you see the sunlight only half of the year, we drakies are more prone to this, especially the women; not only of our dark skin but women tend to be more indoors and covered up a lot more.
So save yourself from future dhabar xanuun taah iyo lafo garaac and I don't know what, and just take the amount of D-vitamin supplement you need.!

The best thing would be to expose yourself to the sun more.

The thing is the sun up here in north is not strong enough for us to develop enough vitamin D in our skin. So it's strongly advised to take pills all year around and expose yourself to the sun as much as possible.
reason I'm telling you this I've seen very bad cases, women who had to get shots because the amount of dose hey needed was too much for their liver to handle.

I think covering up or dar-skiined is little to do with this. I saw white people who see the sun yet lacking Vitamin-d. I think that some people lack it in general, but older women ( the older you get) the more your body slows down hence the need for vitamin-d.

Re: Ladies do you remember your D-vitamin?
Vitamin D deficiency is a serious issue in the Somali diaspora, and it can really mess you up, specially the kids being born here, pregnant mothers need to take extra care of the vitamin d level. The reason why so many suffer from diabetes, arthritis etc in the Somali community is closely linked to their ignorance of vitamin D, chances are your mother, aunt or any elderly female or even male relative of yours is currently on some BS calcium tablets, Vitamin D is produces the enzymes that can absorb calcium from foods, so taking calcium does not help. Joint problems, muscle, bone, ligament pain etc are all related to vitamind D, also your immune systems relies heavily on vitamin D, thus being deficient makes you vulnerable to all sorts of illnesses that are really bad for elderly people in particular.
to avoid becoming deficient just do this.
1. don't miss your breakfast: people tend to miss their breakfast and miss the opportunity to intake some vitamin D in food.
2. go out during the early parts of the day: morning jugging/walking is perfect, sun gazing a few minutes at time in the morning is top.
3. add vitamin D to your diet: i know fish has the most vitamin D but you will find that Eggs and other foods have high Vitamin D.
4. take supplements during winter, i take one course for one month, usually from mid Dec to mid Jan. If you are in UK or rainy, cloudy place make it a habit to take one month course every bloody year.
If you notice you get darker because of the sun, its your genes kicking in, I have a sibling just 6 years ago we were both same skin color, we use to spend many hours outside everyday after school, I added on 3-4 shades she is still light skin, so if you obsessed with skin color and you notice your getting darker with more sun exposure it is your genes being activated by the sun, stay indoors and take more supplements i guess if you like, however if you don't or you don't care, the su is not toxic, enjoy it or put some sun cream on, however most likely your genes will activate later in life as you cannot avoid the sun forever. there is a reason why so many light skinned Somalis in Nordic or cooler countries, but more sunnier places they are darker especially Somalia.
this gene activation is prevalent in white races also, the sun gives them freckles and I guess the sun makes some Somalis darker. No one has researched Somali genetic, not my knowledge so I am just speaking from experience plus observation.

actually it has much to do with it and yes of course even cadaans are prone to this since the sun isn't bright enough for the most part of the year, but being dark+hijabi make the matter just worse.daiman wrote:I think covering up or dar-skiined is little to do with this. How long do i need to expose my face and hands to get enough vitamin D?
Just pop the pill and call it a day.

I take D-vitamin every day. When the bottle expires I might consider switching to mutli vitamin bottle that also contains vitamin D.
