Out of the twelve competitors representing Bahrain at the Olympics, only two were born in Bahrain, while seven were born in Ethiopia and two in Kenya.[2] The majority of the Bahraini team consists of foreign-born individuals naturalized recently only so they can represent Bahrain in sports. To deflect attention away from this fact, the pro-government media has been using invented Arab-sounding names to hide their ethnic origin[3] :
