A local Kenyan official has been killed in what police suspect is a retaliatory attack for the arrest of a secessionist leader in Coast province.

Salim Changu was hacked to death in the coastal town of Kwale, police say.

His death comes shortly after Mombasa Republican Council (MRC) Oscar Mwamnuadzi was arrested during a gunfight at his home in the town, in which two people were killed.

Tension has been rising in Kenya ahead of general elections due in March 2013.

More than 100 people have been killed in ethnic clashes in the south-east Tana River area since August, in the bloodiest violence since the disputed 2007 presidential election.

'Bodyguards shot'
Police spokesman Aggrey Adoli said Mr Changu, the assistant chief for the Kombani area, was probably killed by MRC members who viewed him as a traitor, Kenya's Daily Nation newspaper reports.

Earlier, police launched an operation against the MRC following accusations that it planned to disrupt school examinations.

Two of Mr Mwamnuadzi's bodyguards were killed during the raid on his home in Kwale and 38 people were arrested, the Daily Nation reported.

In July, Kenya's High Court lifted a ban on the MRC, which the government had outlawed in 2010 after accusing it of being a criminal gang.

The MRC accuses the government of marginalising the ethnic groups living along the coast, which is the centre of the country's tourism sector.

Calls for the secession of the mainly Muslim coastal region tend to intensify in the run-up to general elections, analysts say.

Xiinow,

Unlike other Jabhad like the SDLF (Sabot Defense Liberation Front), the Mt. Elgon Militia, Mungiki, the MRC share a border with Somalia and with many former Kenyatti fighters returning from serving Shabab and the sense of persecution due to religion being felt in the coast makes things more volatile.

The KDF will only return home once the funding from Galbeedka ends.

AW; you wish evil for Kenya, but you dream too much. This forum is awash with comments of how your colonel friend told you KDF was not prepared to talk of how KDf doesn't have the ability to capture Kismayo and even claiming that the number of Kenyan troops dead are more than 22.

AW, this is your "hero" the president of the MRC. Let me tell you 1 thing; SLDF were more organized than these demoniacs. I'm glad the events are going as per script; And what is so special about somalia? And what is so difficult about killing these fighters? If they couldn't fight us in Kismayu, what makes you think they can mount a war in .ke? If shk Dor continues supporting these terrorists, he'll go the way of Shk Rogo, Shk Khan, and Shk Kassim. Watch this space. and BTW, MRC are very unpopular

Let me save you from Aw's "analysis." are your ears on the Ground? Bardhere anyone? Jilib? KDF special ops are currently engaged in a Tet-a-tet with alsheydan in areas beyond it's Amisom mandate. And btw the photo of the "chai ni kismayu fella" (nicholas is his name, was enlarged and placed at the 10th Engineering garrison in Nanyuki. I guess we'll be saying "Samaki ni Shabelle" though it doesn't have the same ring to it :(
