Banning khat is a BAD IDEA. It will drive up the prices and make it costlier (price wise and potential legal woes) to chew. Khat chewers here in the US pay 20 times more for the same khat as in London however they still chew.

It would be great to ban it in the UK. However, doing that in Somalia carries many complications and needs lengthy studies. Alternative jobs must also be available for the thousands of single mothers who support their children, parents and siblings by selling it. Sheik Sharif (former president) suspended it briefly a couple of months ago and the whole city was shutdown. He did it because the tax levied on imports and what his office received didn't match.
