An effort to enhance revenues in eastern Somaliland

Post by Siciid85 »

The minister of finance and minister of fisheries & ports paid a visit to the longest coastline in Somaliland which happens to be in the Sanaag region in a attempt to
raise revenues in eastern Somaliland and to encourage the local citizens of that region to take more advantage of the abundance of resources available in their coasts.
To also establish better qualified administrations in those coastal areas that are more accountable when taxing foreign boats fishing in the coastline of Sanaag region.

I agree the government should something for them first, however the issue of foreign boats fishing in the long coastlines not being taxed properly and some of the
coastal dwellers not that interested in fishing(to take advantage of the abundance of resources availabe) needs to be tackled aswell.

The somaliland coast garuds are used for Berbera area, they don't reach Xiis. The problem is so much goverment assistance to the west and zero for the east and yet they are asked to pay taxes ?? for what, ?

Look at the 10 million donated by Kuwait to rebuild airports , the entire 10 million was used for Hargaysa and Berbera , why do we need 2 aiport that less then few hours away from reatch other when 80% of country is located in the east with no roads and airport . How can the city of Burco get any revune when most of its former districts were made into provinces and some annexed and added to Saaxil. How can Burco get revune or the east when most of the people land at airports at Berbera and Hargaysa and charged the entry fee there and not a penny is given to the east???

All majore roads be it Dilla, be it Borama bi it Gabilay area , Hargaysa all is in the west. The eastern people are divided they need to put their shit together and once and for all settle this injusitce its been 22 years and this goverment has reached them yet.

Some valid points. However let me correct you the coast guards actually do reach Xiis and Maydh(there is videos of it them tackling piracy) but the headquarters is Berbera
since it is the largest coastal city in Somaliland. With that said, i also share the sentiment that there is a imbalance between western Somaliland and eastern Somaliland and it is
about time the government stops directing everything they get to western Somaliland but distribute it fairly so the real eastern Somaliland citizens (i am not talking
about the spies) don't feel alienated. In my opinion all this imbalance between east and west started in the former Somali republic era, not a single road or port was built in
the largest region of Somaliland (Sanaag), so it is something that also has its roots in the past. A good example of the imbalance between eastern and western Somaliland is
Saaxil and Sanaag regions.

Saaxil which has less than half of the population in Sanaag.

1.Port

2.Airport

3.Paved roads

Sanaag largest region of Somaliland.
1.No port

2.No airport

3.No paved roads

Sanaag is a diverse region settled by HJ,HY,Warsangeli + other minority clans. Why should one group do all the hard work for Sanaag region? when they are already building the road between Hargeysa-Oodweyne-Burco. Other groups need to step up aswell.

The easiest way to increase revenues is to create state run corporations.

1) Airline company
2) Postal company
3) Fishing company
4) Telecommunications
5) Banking
6) Greyhound-like service

There is nothing wrong with companies owned by the state. All Western countries do it. Many third world countries do it. Singapore, many who regard it as the most free market country in the world, has an economy where 50-60% of it's GDP is generated by government or government-linked corporations.

Another way is to decrease spending. If you cant afford it, its best not fund it to the extent you want to or to not fund it at all.

Sanaag or Ceerigaabo is isolated simply due to lack of paved roads, plain and simple. The Sanaag region needs two main roads I'd suggest one connecting Burao to Ceerigaabo and the other one Oog connecting Ceerigaabo. I'd suggest one through the Guban area as well in the name of Berbera alongside the red sea all the way to Ceerigaabo. But hey, if the govt isn't lifting one finger ins't trying to contribute anything then who will? they are too busy bribing and scamming the poor tax payer.

When they put away money and once in a while decide to do something every single penny goes to galbeed. They don't get passed Hargeysa or Berbera, every single form of horumar in the east is made possible by a NGO, the locals themselves or the people from abroad. The govt doesn't deserve credit at all.

Reer Sallaxley and reer Oodweyne/Togdheer are building their own roads with their own wealth without any government assistance. It shouldn't be much different for Sanaag
considering they have wealthy individuals hailing from that region. But as Oday Jaamac of Maydh put it, it could be the fact all the wealthy people from Sanaag have relocated to
other regions and the Sanaag diaspora for some odd reason are not that organized.

So there is three factors.

1. Government neglecting the area.

2. The so called NGOs operating in this area not doing their job properly in regards to this region.

3.The people who hail from this region neglecting it in favor of some fancy houses in other regions.

Do you think the government has the funds to create all those companies when they are struggling to distribute the development to all the regions fairly?
most major companies in Somaliland like Telecommunications, Airlines , Coca Cola factory, Soap factor, milk factory etc all this is owned by business people
not the government. In conclusion it is actually the businessmen/businesswomen in Somaliland who created a lot of jobs for the people of Somaliland.

I'm seriously sick of that, kudos and nothing more than respect to reer Sallaxley and reer Oodweyne who are building their own roads. But that should be done by the government, something went seriously wrong if the local teenager from Oodweyne or Sallaxley decided to grab his scoop and started building his own road with his own sweat and blood. Isn't a certain minister appointed for these certain issues?

CaynabaX i agree, however those areas had enough of waiting for the gov to do something about the infrastructure so took matters to their own hands. The east is slowly getting
there. New JSL Ministry of finance branch and other buildings opened in Ceerigaabo.
