The brutal nature of Somali dugsis tends to produce quite a few atheists.

I don't see how its beneficial to associate learning the Qur'an with pain and humiliation

Reminds me of two awowes. One was a warrior, who fought valiantly for his tol. HIs brother was an imam and respected in his region. The warrior brother used to get upset at his younger brother's clerical activities especially when the younger brother refused to train any of his sons in combat. One day, a neighboring clan raided the village and found the wadaad brother there about to perform his prayers. They were going to behead him but he begged them to spare him until he did his salat. They agreed and cut off his head soon after. His brother returns to find his brother beheaded and said, "Kutub dheere muxu walakegi uu taray, hadu heesto 1 wiil oo waranle ah, tan kuma dhici laheyn"

So this wadaad is preparing his flock for both this world and the next.

lol@awahab.

@dan, maybe that's the whole point - to scare kids who are not doing good. Look @ the 1st image, it is lowered.
