What would be an improvement for a person depends on the individual. I know some people who need to learn to start being more aware of their own situation and not put themselves into ruin (by sharing, spending, etc) and those who are selfish and spoiled who need to share more.

I think that reflection is the best starting point. It's healthy to spend some quiet, alone time to reflect on one's life, actions, day, choices, and habits as well as on how we affect or treat others. Sometimes a journal may be helpful in this endeavour.

Next, one should evaluate their values, goals, and on the person they've always hoped to be (but may not have realized it before). What do they want out of life? What do they imagine would be the best way to live one's life? For example, I want to learn, grow wise, and help create positive change if Allah wills. I highly value critical thinking, independent thought, truth, sincerity, and knowledge. So I study, pay attention to the news but am careful about what I believe or come to accept as being truth. I also am critical of societal standards and pay close attention to my own motives - why do I choose to wear certain things or makeup, why do I seem to look at people who are not well dressed differently from those who are dressed well and groomed. I then identify my assumptions and generalizations and reason with myself. When I see the irrationality of some of my ways or views, I begin to take a more logical view.

Above all, Islam is most important. I say this often but it is true - reading the Qur'an has changed me. What I thought Islam was, who Allah is, what was true and real changed completely. It feels as though my whole life changed and with it my place in the universe. Suddenly everything connected. I think that true faith and often returning to God is the best and healthiest thing for believers. It has gotten me through a lot.

For the race thing, I think educating yourself about history is helpful. We're all the same. Animals who got lucky and will eventually die. Then our bodies will contribute to the earth, the same earth that kept you alive and will forget about someone when they're not. I find remembering that keeps me in check.

I think the policy of 'leaving the place as you found it or better' applies to life altogether.
