As for the funeral, not $1 was spent by the State to pay for it. He had it in his will that the MSB regime should not pay for it nor take credit for his funeral. His wife who lives in Sweden even turned away Abdullahi Ahmed Addow who was sent to Rome to arrange the funeral. Abdullahi Isse did not want anything to do with the regime either in life nor death.

Abdullahi Isse was a well loved leader as shown by the participants in his funeral including one lady who within ear shot of MSB cried that the true leader of the country had died. MSB never wanted to work with Abdullahi Isse and viewed him as a rival whose broad appeal and popularity would be detrimental to his regime. Abdullahi was one of those few leaders who could have passed as a national conciliator.
