Lillaahiya interesting points you have made. I don't mean to take a myopic look at a systemic problem, but I'm Somali and we do that sort of thing. In any case, the plight of Somali people takes precedence over the issues of African Americans, irrespective of faith. Although some of our problems overlap, others are distinct and separate from their issues; a different lens is needed to examine our issues from our perspective. Sorry sis. On top of deen I share more in common with my kins people; even if we ring each others necks over qabil-drenched politics at your local coffee joint.

As it should since charity does start at home; however, my posts do not suggest otherwise. Being cognizant and highlighting the inequalities a certain group faces (African Americans in this case) doesn't equate believing that the former's struggles are more important than the challenges of one's own family or community. Being informed simply curbs ignorance. And yes, some of our problems do overlap which is why we should educate ourselves on such matters.

I agree it is good to stay informed about these issues. (1) Disproportionate numbers of blacks Incarcerated, (2) Divided by petty differences, (3) belief in the fallacy of a post-racial world, (4) high drop out rates/ higher ADHD diagnosis and special education referrals among blacks than other groups, (5) fatherlessness [physically absent or emotionally unavailable when present], (6) lack of financial education, (7) no institutions to call their own (always influenced by outsiders that pull the strings of their organizations) etc...

I get it sis. The reality is many of us are conveniently black when facing systemic racism, but Somali when it suits us. Manipulative yes but that's identity politics for you. - Shifting alliances and identifications based on what temporarily benefits.
