CV - Af Somaali?

Post by BlackVelvet »

Have you included it in the list of languages you can speak? Do you think it's a good idea?

I anglicized my first name and initial my last name so saying I speak Somali would be stupid for me

Its not a good idea. I'd only do it if I'm applying for immigrant services or something.

Don't make yourself a target. Keep it out of the résumé. It does more harm than good.

When you are in Africa (Somalia & Kenya) its necessary to include it in the languages you speak when you are applying for UN/NGO jobs and others may be. Because some tasks require Somali speakers like when being assigned to field works. But when you are in the west I don't think its really significant. I agree with AJ (Saqajama  balaayo magac xun) when it comes to this.

I normally tell them that I speak:

English (this one is legit)
Arabic (This one is all lie I only know ya walad weynak)
Somali (Forgot this one but now reviving it)
Amhara (Completely forgot)
Tigray (Never spokes other than few words)
Oromo (Forgot this one for good)

Somali is a legit language and one should be proud of his heritage, employers respect that. Diversity always enriches the working environ and the company as whole. Don't be shy.

This role has nothing to do with Somalis, but it has a lot to do with being able to work with different types of people from different backgrounds from varying organisational levels.

I've always had Somali in there but now I've got 3 other languages (English excluded which I'll have on there) so I wonder if the only purpose it serves is to let people know I am Somali. But then I also have Swahili which lets them know I'm African. And from my name it's obvious I'm Muslim.

To those who say it depends. Does it really?

You have one letter for a last name? Surely you have to type it out in full in the application forms?

You are the reason why forms say "FULL NAME"  I always wondered how else one would write their name
