Egyptian General Sisi warns Ethiopia of military action over Dam

August 25, 2013 — General Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, Commander-in-Chief of the Egyptian Armed Forces and the Egyptian Ministry of Defense, has warned the Ethiopian regime of military action if they continue to build the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, according to local Ethiopian newspapers.

In a brief telephone call made on Saturday, General Sisi reiterated his country can not afford to lose even one drop of Nile water and warned Ethiopian officials that his military is prepared to use force if they did not abandon their plans for the controversial dam.

Egypt, which receives the fewest annual rainfall in Africa, is concerned that the dam project would damage its ability to deliver drinking water to its over 85 million population. But Ethiopian officials have cemented their position of late and refuse to consider Egypt's dire water shortages.

“The Renaissance Dam is here to stay. It is advisable for all actors of the political establishment in Egypt to come to terms with this reality,” said Getachew Reda, a spokesman for Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn.

Adding more sense of urgency for Egypt, Ethiopia announced a few weeks ago that it had begun the process of diverting the course of the Blue Nile River to its dam, raising fears over Egypt’s long term water security and stability. http://www.durame.com/2013/08/egyptian- ... ia-of.html

i will support him if he has the balls to do something.
The only problems they would face is range issues for their F-16's.
If they can arrange refueling in a sudanese airbase and place their personnel there they could do it easily.
Ethiopian Su-27 do not have the avionics to counter even the old egyptian F-16's and they have shown how terrible they are in combat.
Ethiopia has no real airdefense , meaning the egyptians can swoop in, and out and evade any ethiopian aircraft and even engage them with little concern over losses.

the problem is ethiopia only needs $200 million dollars to upgrade a few planes with new radar, ECM
and some long raneg missles from the suite the russians love like the R-77 and longer ones.
this will give egyptians headaches even with mediocre ethiopian pilots.

They should sit over a saxan of ful and a saxan of spicy canjero and sort this out. Btw. Starting a war with ethiopia would be the perfect diversion from the problems in egypt. I doubt this report is factual. However.

there will be no military action or air strikes against Ethiopia by Egypt. Egyptians are bluffing but the sad thing is everyone knows this fact including the Ethiopians so their bluff is going to have no effect  . It is hard to imagine Egypt risking a lot by striking Ethiopia for a little gain. They know that any strike will cause a huge diplomatic backlash in the international arena in a time they can't risk that. Also they are aware that Ethiopia in now capable to retaliate in the form of terrorist attacks against Aswan dam which if it happens will cause a massive economic turmoil. If the Aswan dam is completely destroyed it could even flood the entire city of Cairo so Egyptians won't risk this.

Plus, Ethiopia is not stupid enough to divert substantial amount of water from the Nile river so it forces Egypt's hand for an action. Ethiopians plan to divert water in a way that causes a minimum reduction of water follow to Egypt and when the dam is completed the volume of water follow to Egypt will increase as the result. Hydro-electric power generation does not reduce water it just circulates but irrigation reduces water and Ethiopia re-iterated many times that it does not intend to use Nile water for irrigation purposes.
My guess is the issue of the Nile water dispute will be solved on the table not through military actions because the sides that involve in this dispute are rational enough to resolve things peacefully.
